Box Score Led by double-doubles from Julia Borecka and Anne Pietkiewicz, the 15th-ranked Moccasins outlasted a stubborn Florida Tech team in five sets, 25-18, 19-25, 25-23, 23-25, 17-15, to win their Sunshine State Conference opener Wednesday night at Jenkins Field House.
With the win, the Moccasins improved to 8-4, while Florida Tech had a four-match winning streak snapped and fell to 6-3.
The Moccasins had taken a two sets to one lead, only to have the Panthers battle back to win the fourth set 25-23. The Moccasins grabbed an early 4-1 lead in the deciding fifth set, but found themselves trailing 14-12 before a kill by Lauren Huber and a Panther attack error tied it at 14-14. An exhange of points kept it tied at 15-15, then another Panther attack error was followed by another kill from Huber to clinch the match.
Borecka had a 16 kill, 12 dig performance for her third double-double of the season, while Pietkiewicz notched her fifth double-double with 14 kills and 20 digs. Anna Greenwood added 15 kills, Kelly Sherman picked up 10, Courtney Johnson matched Pietkiewicz with 20 digs and Elise Burke handed out 50 assists.
This was the Moccasins' third five-set match in their last four and their fifth five-set match of the season, four of which they have won.
