Rollins Rallies To Top Mocs In Five At NCAA Regional

Box Score

The Moccasins were one set away from advancing in the NCAA South Regional, but Rollins rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win the match in five sets, 22-25, 28-26, 14-25, 25-23, 15-9 and end the Moccasins' season Thursday at Tampa.

FSC had won the first set, leading all the way after breaking a 1-1 tie. The second set proved to be the crucial set in the match. With 19 ties, five lead changes and no lead larger than three points, the set had Rollins up 24-21, but the Moccasins rallied to tie it at 24-24 on a block by Diana Castrillon and then take a 25-24 lead on a Rollins attack error. Rollins responded with a kill by Megan Hodges and an ace by Jill Lau. Ashley Martin's kill tied the set at 26-26 before a Hodges kill and a Moccasin attack error gave the Tars the win.

The Moccasins took a 2-1 lead in the match with a relatively easy 25-14 win in set three, using a 9-2 run to pull away from a 10-8 advantage and maintain the lead the rest of the set.

Rollins never trailed in winning the fourth set and then jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the deciding fifth set and never relinquished the lead. The Moccasins finished their season at 21-9.

Anne Pietkiewicz posted her seventh double-double of the season and 17th of her career, leading the Moccasins with 18 kills, 16 digs and a career-high six blocks. Lauren Huber added 10 kills, while Ashley Martin and Natalie Arvizu each recorded nine and Kelly Sherman each had eight. Anna Niebuhr led the defensive effort with 22 digs in the setback.

Rollins hit just .193 for the match, compared to FSC's .265, but the Tars received 26 kills from Sarah Mendoza and 21 from Hodges.
