Mocsâ?? Fast Start Sinks Pirates

Box Score

Scoring the game's first 15 points in just over five minutes, the Moccasins cruised to an 82-65 win over Armstrong Atlantic Saturday at the Saint Leo Sleep Inn Classic.

After the Moccasins' fast start, the Pirates never got closer than four points the rest of the game.  They cut the margin to 36-32 with 2:18 remaining in the first half, but the Moccasins pushed it back up to seven at halftime, 41-34.  Freshman Taylor Maldonado hit a three-pointer in the first 30 seconds of the second half to get the lead back to double digits, where it stayed for the rest of the game.

For the second straight game, newcomers played a prominent role in the Moccasins' success.  Maldonado led a balanced scoring attack with 17 points.  Transfers Emma Cannon and Sofie Lundberg each scored 14 points, with Cannon grabbing a team-high eight rebounds and Lundberg connecting on four three-pointers.  Cannon was selected as the MVP of the Sleep Inn Classic and Maldonado was named to the All-Classic Team.

The Moccasin veterans also contributed significantly.  Chelsea Johnson, who was scoreless in Friday night's win, scored 13 points, including four three-pointers.  The Moccasins made 14 of 29 three-pointers in the game, one short of the school record.  Megan Dzikas handed out a career-high nine assists.

Now 2-0 to start the season, the Moccasins play their home opener Tuesday at 5:30 against Puerto Rico-Bayamon at Jenkins Field House.
