Lady Mocs Get Key SSC Win Over Rollins

Box Score

LAKELAND - Chelsea Johnson added a new dimension to her talents Saturday night - rebounder. The Moccasins' 5-4 junior guard posted her first career double-double with 14 points and a career-high 10 rebounds, as the Mocs topped Rollins 76-71 here at Jenkins Field House.

Johnson's previous rebounding high had been eight earlier this season against Tampa, but she snared 10 defensive rebounds against the Tars, delivered five assists and had two steals to help her team stay in the upper division of the Sunshine State Conference race. The win boosted the Moccasins' record to 17-5, 7-4 in the SSC, while Rollins slipped to 15-6, 7-3 in the SSC.

A Johnson three-pointer with 7:14 left in the first half started the Moccasins on a 20-7 run that sent them to the locker room at halftime with a 41-30 lead.

The Moccasins never trailed in the second half, although Rollins got as close as three points late in the game. Kourtnie Berry's three-pointer for the Tars with 33 seconds left trimmed the Moccasin lead to 74-71, but Megan Dzikas hit a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left to put the game away.

Not only did Johnson have a double-double, but Michaela Hawley had one as well, her fifth of the season, with a 20-point, 10-rebound performance. Dzikas also scored 20 points, handed out seven assists, grabbed eight rebounds and had two steals. Johnson, Hawley and Dzikas were a combined 15-for-15 from the free throw line, with Hawley hitting eight of those attempts.

The Moccasins are on the road Wednesday night for a 5:30 game at Eckerd. The game will be broadcast live on SportsLine Radio Network (SLRN).
