Box Score 2 Led by Ashley Martin's 30 kills, the Moccasins won both matches Saturday at the Armstrong Atlantic Classic in Savannah, Ga. They got past Augusta State, 25-18, 23-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-11, in their first match, then topped Armstrong Atlantic, 25-22, 25-18, 16-25, 25-21 in their final match.
The wins boost the Moccasins' record to 7-1, as they went 3-1 for the weekend.
Against Augusta State, Martin hit .371, while Lauren Huber picked up 14 kills and hit .571 and Natalie Arvizu also had 14 kills and hit .379. Anne Pietkiewicz just missed a double-double, as she had nine kills and collected 15 digs.
The Mocs hit .292 as a team for the match. Anna Niebuhr had a team-high 16 digs.
In the decisive fifth set, the Moccasins broke an 8-8 tie with four straight points. After an Augusta State service error put FSC ahead 14-10, the Jaguars scored one more point before Martin closed out the match with her 18th kill.
Against Armstrong Atlantic, the Moccasins had to come from behind to win the first two sets. They trailed 14-6 in the first set and 7-2 in the second set. The Pirates never trailed en route to a third set victory. In the fourth set, the Moccasins trailed 9-8 before reeling off five straight points and led the rest of the way.
Martin had 12 kills, but was the only Moccasin in double figures in kills. Pietkiewicz had nine kills and Arvizu seven. Niebuhr posted a team-high 17 digs.
The Moccasins play their Sunshine State Conference opener Wednesday night at 7 at Jenkins Field House against Florida Tech.
