Box Score After the Moccasins won the first two sets Monday afternoon at West Florida, it looked like the long trip to Pensacola would be a successful one. West Florida didn't let that happen, however, as the Argonauts rallied to win the next three sets and claim the match 21-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-12, 15-11.
The loss dropped the Moccasins' record to 9-4, while UWF improved to 10-4.
The Moccasins won the first set with a 10-3 run that allowed them to overcome an 18-15 deficit. In the second set, they were up 24-15 and withstood a 7-0 run that got the Argonauts as close as 24-22 before Elena Sorich closed out the set with a kill.
West Florida broke a 6-6 tie with three straight points in the third set and led the rest of the way. FSC was trailing 22-14, but outscored UWF 9-2 to get as close as 24-23, but a Moccasin service error gave the Argonauts the set.
In the fourth set, the Argonauts jumped out to an early 6-1 lead and the Moccasins never got closer than three points. The deciding fifth set was tied at 4-4 when UWF scored three straight points and led the rest of the way to close out the match.
Lauren Huber led a quartet of Moccasins in double figure kills with 12, as she hit .440 for the match. Ashley Martin added 11 kills and hit .346, while Anne Pietkiewicz and Elena Sorich each picked up 10 kills. Anna Niebuhr delivered 16 digs in the loss.
West Florida also had four players in double figure kills, led by Katie Johnson, who had 21, hit .436 for match and added 10 digs for a double-double.
The Moccasins return home for a pair of Sunshine State Conference matches Friday and Saturday at Jenkins Field House. They will meet first-place Barry (7-1, 4-0 SSC) Friday at 7 p.m. and Nova Southeastern (5-7, 2-2 SSC) Saturday at 4 p.m. The Mocs will get a rematch with West Florida on Oct. 16, when the Argonauts come to Lakeland.
