Mocs Claim Sole Possession Of SSC Lead With Win At Tampa

Box Score

In the Sunshine State Conference preseason women's basketball poll, the Moccasins were picked for first, but Tampa received more first-place votes.  Wednesday night the Moccasins voted themselves into sole possession of first place with a 77-72 road win at Tampa.

Winning at Tampa for the first time since Feb. 16, 2005, the Moccasins won their seventh straight game and snapped Tampa's 12-game winning streak.  FSC is 13-2 overall, while Tampa, ranked 24th in NCAA Division II, is 13-3.

Chelsea Johnson matched her season scoring high with 21 points, including four three-pointers, and also delivered a career-high nine assists.  Emma Cannon notched her eighth double-double of the season with a 17-point/17-rebound effort, matching her season rebounding high.  Sofie Lundberg came off the bench and tossed in 15 points to go with a season-high five rebounds.

Tampa scored the first basket of the game, marking the first time in the last five games the Moccasins had trailed, but by halftime the Moccasins had a five-point advantage, thanks to a 13-6 run over the final 5:03 of the period.

The game was tied seven times in the second period before Tanja Speaker's three-pointer with 4:59 left broke a 65-65 tie and gave the Moccasins the lead for good.

For the sixth straight game, the Moccasins had double-figures in three-pointers, connecting on 13, with six different players hitting at least one.  That was enough to offset a 34-point, 13-rebound performance by Tampa's Taja Green.  The Spartans' leading scorer, Gianna Messina, who was averaging 16.2, was held to just seven points.

The Moccasins are on the road again Saturday with a 2 p.m. game at Rollins.
