Chelsea Johnson, Emma Cannon and Michaela Hawley combined for 55 points to lead the Moccasins to a 78-57 Sunshine State Conference win over Florida Tech Sunday at Jenkins Field House in the Moccasins’ SSC opener.
The win improved FSC’s record to 8-2, while it snapped Florida Tech’s eight-game winning streak and dropped the Panthers’ record to 12-2, 1-1 in the SSC.
Johnson led FSC with a season-high 21 points, including five three-pointers. Cannon produced her fifth double-double of the season with a 17-point, 12-rebound effort. Hawley tossed in 17 points. The trio combined for 34 of the Moccasins’ 53 second-half points, as FSC overcame a four-point halftime deficit.
Johnson’s three-pointer had given the Moccasins a 20-12 lead with 10:59 left in the first half, but the Moccasins scored only three points over the next ten and a half minutes and Florida Tech took a 29-23 lead before Hawley’s basket just before halftime made it a four-point margin.
Cannon’s basket with 12:56 remaining broke a 40-40 tie and the Moccasins followed with a 16-6 run that built the lead to 58-46 with 8:14 to go and the Panthers never got closer than eight points the rest of the way. FSC’s 78 points were the most allowed in a game this season by Florida Tech.
The Moccasins shot 57.9 percent from the field in the second half, while Florida Tech shot just 27.8 percent. For the game, FSC shot 45.7 percent to Florida Tech’s 35.9 percent. FSC hit 11 of 31 from three-point range, while the Panthers were just 2-11. Kristen Dixon, Briauna Hagins and Lynisha Nelson each scored 12 points for the Panthers.
FSC plays at Saint Leo Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
