Rollins Hands Mocs First SSC Loss & Stops Win Streak

Box Score

Rollins finished the first half strong and started the second half strong to stop the Moccasins' seven-game winning streak and hand them their first Sunshine State Conference loss, 85-63, Saturday at Winter Park.

The loss knocked the Moccasins out of sole possession of first place in the SSC and dropped them back into a tie for first with Tampa, as the Spartans downed Nova Southeastern. Both FSC and Tampa are 6-1 in the league. The Moccasins are 13-3 overall. Rollins improved to 16-3 overall and 4-3 in the SSC.

The Tars led for almost the first seven minutes of the game, but the Moccasins took a 14-13 lead with 13:05 left in the half on a basket by Emma Cannon and led until the Tars tied the game at 26-26 with 6:03 remaining in the half. Rollins finished the half with a 15-9 run and led 41-35 at the intermission. The Moccasins were able to get only as close as four points, 46-42, early in the second half before the Tars produced a 17-8 run that put Rollins in command at 63-50 with 10:23 left and FSC never got any closer.

Chelsea Johnson led the Moccasins with 19 points, but for the first time this season, she was the only Moccasin in double figures. FSC had had at least three players scoring in double figures in their previous 15 games. Kourtnie Berry led a balanced Rollins scoring effort with 18 points. Jasmine Bradley scored 16, Amber Heistan added 14 and Sarah Blackburn tossed in 10.

The Moccasins shot a season-low 33.3% from the field and were out-rebounded 49-32.

Wednesday the Moccasins entertain Nova Southeastern at 5:30 p.m. at Jenkins Field House.
