Big Second Half Carries Mocs Past Pirates, 97-89

Box Score

With all five starters scoring in double figures, the Moccasins used a big second half to get past Armstrong Atlantic, 97-89, Monday night at Savannah, Ga.

It was the Moccasins' second win over the Pirates in nine days. They had won 85-84 on Nov. 26 in Lakeland in the championship game of the Terrace Hotel/Lader Media Group Tournament.

Seth Evans was the Mocs' top scorer, as they matched their best scoring effort of the season. He had 19 points, including three from three-point range and 4-4 from the free throw line. His final two points of the game came on a pair of free throws with 11 seconds left. That extended his streak of consecutive free throws without a miss to 27, which is a new FSC record. It broke the previous mark of 25 straight held by Jim Harris (1982-83), Chris Brooks (2002-03) and Brandon Jenkins (2008-09). Evans has hit 34-35 (97.1 percent) at the line this season.

Brett Bailey, who had a 13-point, 14-rebound double-double in the Nov. 26 win, topped that effort with an 18-point, 18-rebound peformance. His 18 rebounds are a career high.

Garrett Putman joined Bailey in the double-double ranks with a season-high 15 points and 10 rebounds. Kevin Capers tossed in 17 points and Dominic Lane added 12.

Chris Vanlandingham led Armstrong with 22 points, while Aric Miller added 19.

The Pirates had a 42-41 lead at halftime, but the Moccasins outscored them 28-17 in the first 10 minutes of the second half. FSC had its biggest lead of 17 points, 87-70, at the 3:57 mark.

The Moccasins return to Sunshine State Conference action Thursday night against Florida Tech at 7:30 at Jenkins Field House. The women's game between FSC and Florida Tech will start at 5:30.
