Mocs Rally From Two Sets Down To Top #24 Rollins

Box Score

The Moccasins got the Sunshine State Conference portion of their season off to a rousing start Wednesday night, rallying from two sets down to beat No. 24 Rollins, 18-25, 27-29, 25-23, 25-23, 15-5 at Jenkins Field House.

The win improved the Moccasins' record to 6-3, while Rollins dropped to 5-4. It was the Moccasins' third five-set win of the season.

Not only were the Moccasins down two sets to none, but they fell behind 4-0 in the third set before scoring seven straight points. A service ace by Lauren Huber broke a 14-14 tie and the Moccasins led the rest of the set with Erin Callahan's kill clinching it at 25-23.

In the fourth set the Moccasins had to overcome a 14-9 Rollins lead. Back-to-back Rollins attack errors gave the Moccasins the final two points of the set and another 25-23 decision to even the match at two sets apiece.

The deciding fifth set was no contest. The Mocs scored the first eight points, four on aces by Kendall Wilde, who had a career-high seven in the match, and Rollins never threatened.

Huber led the Moccasins with 16 kills and hit .519 for the match, while delivering four blocks. Callahan picked up a career-high 14 kills and hit .321, while Diana Castrillon and Anne Pietkiewicz each produced 10 kills. Elena Sorich led the defensive effort with a career-high 22 digs.

All of that was enough to offset a 20-kill effort by the Tars' Megan Hodges, who leads the SSC in kills.

The Moccasins hit the road for their next four matches, starting Friday night at 7 p.m. at Barry. They will play at Lynn Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
