Moccasins Fall to 4th-Ranked Lynn in Overtime

Box Score

BOCA RATON â€" Brent Theriault came up big in goal for Florida Southern in its make-up game Monday afternoon at Lynn University, and Patrick Abrahamsson scored a second-half goal to give the Mocs a chance, but the 4th-ranked Knights were able to pull out a 2-1 overtime win that moved them within a game of clinching at least a share of the Sunshine State Conference title.

After having two games postponed by weather last week, including their game at Lynn on Saturday, the Moccasins were playing for the first time since knocking off #20 Florida Tech on the road September 29. Looking for their second straight win over a top-25 team, the Moccasins (2-7-1, 1-2 SSC) nearly got it, even with all the time off in between.

The Mocs and Knights (11-1, 6-1) played a scoreless first half with Theriault making four saves, including three on shots inside the box. The Knights’ Simon Gubisch also hit the crossbar in the 23rd minute.

In the second half, Theriault stopped another shot in the 64th minute, but the Mocs were whistled for a foul inside the box immediately after that, giving the Knights a penalty kick. Jack Winter converted from the 12-yard spot to put Lynn on top, 1-0. Then, in the 71st minute, when the Knights turned the ball over in their back third, Abrahamsson was there to turn the misplay into a Florida Southern goal that tied the game at one.

After Theriault made another save in the 88th minute on a shot inside the box, the match went to overtime where Jovaughn Howard had the first shot for either team in the extra session. The shot was blocked, Lynn raced the other way with the ball, and Julian Halder gave the Knights a 2-1 win with his goal at the 92:50 mark.

It was the second time this year Florida Southern lost to a top-25 team in overtime.

Theriault finished the game with a season-high seven saves, while Lynn goalkeeper Matt DiCerbo did not have to make any.

Florida Southern will play another make-up game this Thursday at 7:00 when it hosts Saint Leo.
