LAKELAND - Florida Southern opened the home portion of its 2012-13 schedule here Saturday by falling to NCAA Division I foe Florida International, 192-70 at the Hollis Wellness Center pool.
The Moccasins, who fell to 0-4 on the season, won two of the 14 events that were contested as freshman Heather Burns (Lake City, Fla.) finished first in a the 1,000-yard freestyle and freshman Kelsey Gouge (Snellville, Ga.) finished first in the 100-yard freestyle.
At the meet, Burns swam a time of her season-best time of 10:37.61 to finish less than two-tenths of a second in front of FIU's Mary Boucher, while Gouge, who is the reigning SSC Female Swimmer of the Week, swam a time of 52.79 in the 100-yard freestyle. Her time of 52.79 was an NCAA provisional "B Standard" qualifying time. It was Gouge's sixth individual event win of the season.
Along with her first place finish in the 100-yard freestyle, Gouge also swam on the Mocs second-place 200-yard medley relay team that swam a time of 1:50.53, finished second in the 200-yard freestyle in an NCAA "B Standard" qualifying time of 1:54.17 and finished fifth in the 400-yard IM in an FSC season-best time of 4:44.07, while Burns was fourth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:18.28), sixth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:21.25) and was a member of the Mocs second-place 200-yard freestyle relay team that same a time of 1:41.21.
Other members of the 200-yard medley relay team were freshman Lauren Reynolds (St. Charles, Ill.), freshman Virginia Summer (Newberry, S.C.) and sophomore Catie Carden (Hixson, Tenn.). Reynolds was also on the second place 200-yard freestyle relay team.
Other top performers for the Mocs included senior Stephanie Doran (Flowery Branch, Ga.), freshman Morgan Burns (Hilton, N.Y), senior Missy Witt (Centreville, Va.) and Summer.
Doran was a member of the second-place 200-yard freestyle relay team and had a second place finishes in both the 100-yard backstroke (59.35) and 50-yard freestyle (25.07) and a fourth place showing in the 200-yard backstroke, while Morgan Burns was fourth in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.87) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:29.30) and sixth in the 400-yard IM (4:56.90). Witt had a third place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.74) and was sixth in the 200-yard breaststoke (2:31.78) and Summer was third in both the 200-yard (2:10.54) and 100-yard (1:00.75) backstrokes and was also on the second place 200-yard freestyle relay team.
The Mocs will return to action next Saturday, Nov. 17 as they travel to Winter Park for a dual meet with Rollins. The meet, which will include both the men's and women's teams, will begin at 1 p.m.
