Mocs Fall to Florida State, Emory in Double-Dual Meet

TALLAHASSEE - The Florida Southern Women's Swimming team fell to both NCAA Division I Florida State and NCAA Division III Emory University in a double-dual meet here Saturday at the Morcom Aquatics Center on the FSU campus.

The Moccasins, who are now 0-3 on the young season, fell 179.50-91.50 to the 22nd-ranked Seminoles, while No. 1 ranked Emory earned a 189-99 victory.

In Saturday's meet, the Mocs won three of the 16 events that were contested, including freshman Kelsey Gouge (Snellville, Ga.), who won two of those three events. The other event winner for the Mocs was freshman Alli Crenshaw (Marietta, Ga.).

Gouge took home first place in the 100-yard breaststroke as she swam a season-best time of 1:04.37 and the 200 IM as she had an FSC season-best time of 2:08.76. In addition to her two first place finishes, Gouge also finished third in the 100-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 51.69 and was on the Mocs fourth-place 400-yard medley relay team that swam a time of 3:55.31.

Crenshaw, who won three events in the Mocs season-opening loss to Tampa, had a first place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 5:04.26, along with fourth-place finishes in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.70) and 1,000-yard freestyle (10:22.12). Both of those times were season best marks.

The Mocs 400-yard freestyle relay had a third place finish, while the 400-yard medley relay finished in fourth place. The 400-yard freestyle team members were Crenshaw, senior Anna McIntyre (Kansas City, Mo.), senior Stephanie Doran (Flowery Branch, Ga.) and freshman Virginia Summer (Newberry, S.C.).

Other top performers for the Mocs were Doran, freshman Heather Burns (Lake City, Fla.), freshman Morgan Burns (Hilton, N.Y.) and sophomore Catie  Carden (Hixson, Tenn.).

Doran finished fourth in the 100-yard backstroke with a season-best time of 58.68 and was fifth in the 200-yard backstroke with a season-best time of 2:06.06, while Heather Burns was sixth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:14.67) and was on the fourth-place 400-yard freestyle relay. Morgan Burns was sixth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:15.57 and was on the fourth-place 400-yard freestyle relay and Carden finished fourth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.51.

The Mocs will return to the pool next Saturday, Nov. 10 as they host NCAA Division I foe, Florida Atlantic, in an 11 a.m. dual meet at the Hollis Wellness Center pool.
