Reynolds and Gouge Give Moccasins More Individual Winners; Doran in the Top-3 Three Times on Final Day of Nova Invitational

DAVIE â€" Freshmen Lauren Reynolds and Kelsey Gouge added to their win total on Monday, senior Stephanie Doran had a trio of top-3 finishes, and all of that was enough to keep Florida Southern in fourth place at the end of the 4-day, 8-team Nova Southeastern Invitational.

The Moccasins held on to their position behind Nova Southeastern (1,059.5 points), Tampa (1,047), and Division I Florida International (1,002.5). Their team score of 700.5 put them ahead of Rollins (341) and Catawba (322), while Lynn (220.5) and Lenoir-Rhyne (167) were seventh and eighth respectively.

Reynolds gave Florida Southern its first individual win of the day by taking the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:01.35. That was a little under two seconds ahead of Doran, who finished second. Gouge then gave the Moccasins another win in the next event, capturing the 100-yard freestyle in 50:37 seconds. That broke the previous meet record set by former Moccasin Mary O’Sullivan in 2010, and it was only one-tenth of a second off the Florida Southern school record, which O’Sullivan set at the 2011 National Championships.

While Gouge won the 100-yard freestyle, Doran was third in 52.22 seconds, and Reynolds was tied for sixth. Freshman Morgan Burns then had a strong showing in the 200-yard breaststroke, placing fourth with a 2:24.80, a little over one second behind the winner from Tampa.

In the final event of the meet, Florida Southern placed second in the 400-yard freestyle relay, with Gouge, Doran, Reynolds and senior Anna McIntyre all on that team. Their time of 3:28.75 would have been a meet record, but Tampa won the relay event with a 3:27.60. It was still good enough for a NCAA “B” cut time, one of five earned by the Moccasins on Monday. Doran had two of those in addition to the relay event, while Reynolds and Gouge each had one.

Florida Southern will now break for the Christmas holidays and returns to action on Saturday, January 5 against Bridgeport (CT) at the Hollis Wellness Center Pool.
