Late Goal Sends Queens Past Mocs

In a game that saw four ties and two lead changes, Florida Southern fell to Queens 7-6 Friday night in Charlotte, N.C. With the win Queens improves to 4-2, while Florida Southern falls to 3-5.

The Moccasins struck first as Ricky DeMicco scored an unassisted goal to give the Mocs an early 1-0 lead. Patrick Murphy evened the score 1-1 with 5:10 remaining in the first quarter. Lightening at the 4:27 mark delayed the game for over an hour.  After the delay, Queens’ Evan Farkas scored netted a goal to give Queens a 2-1 lead after the first quarter.

After another Royals' goal, Dane Soresen connected with the back of the cage for his ninth goal of the season and cut the deficit to 3-2 at halftime.

The Moccasins came out firing in the third period outshooting Queens 13-5. Dan Krispinsky won the faceoff to start the quarter. On the ensuing possession Kevin Naslonski found DeMicco cutting towards the cage for the goal to tie the game 3-3. After back-to-back goals for Queens, Sorensen scored twice to tie the game 5-5 after the third quarter.

Farkas scored a man-up goal to give Queens a 6-5 lead with 10:35 remaining in the game. Naslonski’s shot got past the goalie to tie the game for the final time. The Royals’ Thomas Baugh scored an unassisted goal to give the Royals a 7-6 advantage with 1:52 left. The Moccasins had a chance to tie, as Andrew Almansberger intercepted a Royals' pass to give the Mocs the ball with 1:20 remaining, but they were unable to convert.

Sorensen led the Moccasins with three goals, while DeMicco tallied two goals.

Adam Ismaeil led the Mocs with four groundballs, while DJ Lubs forced two turnovers. Almanberger finished the game with 9 saves.

The Moccasins travel to Hickory, N.C. to face Deep South Conference foe Lenoir-Rhyne Sunday at  1 p.m.
