Twelfth-ranked Florida Southern scored 15 first half goals en route to a 26-6 win over Catawba Sunday afternoon at Shuford Stadium in Salisbury, N.C. With the win the Moccasins improve to 8-3 overall, while Catawba falls to 2-7.
The Mocs scored the first six goals of the game, including two from Megan Asper and Rachel Ziter, to take a 6-0 lead eight minutes into the game. After an Indians goal, Lorianne Hoover connected with Caitlin Chase for her second goal of the game. After the two teams traded goals three times, Chase found Kate Culhane cutting towards to cage for her first collegiate goal. The Moccasins scored three unanswered goals in less than a minute to take a 14-4 lead with 2:56 left in the first half. After a Kim McConnery goal, Hoover scored an unassisted goal to give the Mocs a 15-5 lead at the break.
The Moccasins' attack continued in the second half, as Ferree connected with Hoover scored a man-down goal just over a minute into the half. Two minutes later, Chase connected with Asper for a goal to extend the Mocs lead to 17-6. Kortney Kavanagh scored the Indians final goal to cut the lead to 17-6. The Moccasins had seven players contribute as part of nine unanswered goals for the 26-6 final.
Florida Southern had 14 different players score at least one point led by Chase, who tallied four goals and five assists. Asper, Caffrey, Katie Ferree, and Ziter each netted three goals. It was Caffrey and Ziter's first career hat trick. Maureen Cromer scored one goal and dished out three assists in the contest.
The Moccasins set program highs in goals (26), assists (20), points (46), shots (44), and ground balls (37).ÂÂ
Asper led the Mocs with nine draw controls, while Megan Colucci picked up five. The Mocs had nine players pick up at least three ground balls lead by Mara Mason, who picked up six. Lindsay Holdway made three saves in 54 minutes of action.
The Moccasins return to action Friday when they host Converse at Bryant Stadium. Game time is 1 p.m.
