The 15th-ranked women’s lacrosse team scored the first two goals of the contest, but they weren’t enough, as Florida Southern fell to third-ranked Rollins 16-10 Wednesday night at Bryant Stadium. With the win the Tars improve to 14-0, while the Mocs fall to 10-4.
The Moccasins converted their first three shots of the game into goals. Katie Ferree found Lorianne Hoover in front of the cage for the first goal. Mara Mason converted a free position shot for the 2-0 advantage. After a Tars’ goal, Ferree connected with Mason for her 24th goal of the season.
However Rollins then scored five unanswered goals, including two from Sophie Townsend, to take a 6-3 lead with 4:47 remaining. Megan Asper scored an unassisted goal to cut the lead to 6-4. Rollins netted another goal before Hoover converted a free position shot for a man-down goal to cut the deficit to 7-5 at the half. Rollins outshot the Mocs 21-14 in the first half, but Katie Hammerer made 9 saves to limit the Tars attack.
It was a similar story in the second half, as Florida Southern struck first. Ferree found Caitlin Chase cutting towards the cage for a goal to cut the deficit to 7-6. That was the closest the Moccasins got, however, as Rollins scored five unanswered goals to take a 12-6 advantage with 12:18 remaining. Hoover converted a free position goal, before the Tars netted four more. After the two teams traded goals, Asper found Mason for a goal and Danielle LaDuca converted a free position shot for the 16-10 final.
Hoover and Mason each netted three goals, while Asper tallied two goals and one assist. Ferree dished out three assists in the contest.
Katie Gladhill led the Mocs with four draw controls and four ground balls. Hammerer had 14 saves to tie her season high, which she set against Lock Haven.
Florida Southern will play its final home game of the season Saturday against Newberry at 12 p.m. at Bryant Stadium. It will be “Pink Out†Day. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to support breast cancer awareness.
