LAKELAND â€" Florida Southern didn’t get a lot of individual wins here Saturday but earned enough points to beat the Pioneers from Indian River State College, 106.5-97.5 in their second consecutive dual-meet win on the season.
The Moccasins opened the meet finishing second in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:48.38 and would finish second, third and fourth in the 1650-yard freestyle, basically off-setting Indian River’s first place finish in that event. Again the Mocs would lose the 200-yard freestyle but sweep the second-fourth place positions to receive nine total points for the event compared to the Pioneers 10 points.
Freshman Kelsey Gouge (Snellville, Ga.) would get FSC their first and second event wins on the day with her first win coming in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing a half-second faster (24.05) than the second-place finisher. Her second win came in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 52.08.
Freshman Alli Crenshaw (Marietta, Ga.) swam neck-and-neck with Indian River swimmer Hallie Petersohn in the 500-yard freestyle before being able to edge her out over the final two laps to finish in a time of 5:11.27 and secure the win by six-tenths of a second.
Rounding out the individual event wins for the Mocs was freshman Morgan Burns (Hilton, N.Y.) who captured the 200-yard breaststroke event in a personal and season best time of 2:24.65.
The Mocs only won four of the 11 events on the afternoon but swept the second-fourth place positions in four other events helping the women offset the first place finishes by Indian River.
Florida Southern will get back to the pool next Saturday, Jan. 19, in a dual-meet against Nova Southeastern at the NSU Aquatic Complex in Davie. It will be their second to last meet before the Sunshine State Conference Championships on March 13-16.
