Women's Swimming Earns Second Meet Win of Season, Defeats University of Bridgeport

LAKELAND â€" It has been close to three weeks since the Florida Southern Women’s Swimming program was able to get into the pool for a competitive meet but the swimmers showed no side effects from the holiday break as they downed the University of Bridgeport in dominating fashion here Saturday afternoon by a score of 150-94.

The Mocs are ranked eighth in the latest Endless Pools/CollegeSwimming.com NCAA Division II poll and is 13th in the latest CSCAA (College Swimming Coaches Association of America) Division II Poll.

Competing for the first time since their fourth place finish at the Nova Southeastern Shark Invitational Dec.14-17, the Moccasins were able to place first in 10 of the 14 events swam on the afternoon, defeating a Bridgeport program that was the highest vote getter in the latest CSCAA poll, to help give them their second meet win of the 2012-13 season.

Five different Moc swimmers won their events with four of those swimmers winning two total events each. Leading the charge for FSC was freshman swimmer Heather Burns (Lake City, Florida) who won two events and finished second in another.  Her first race on the afternoon was the 1000 yard freestyle (10:40.52), where she blew away her competition by a total of 14 seconds as only three Moc swimmers raced in the event. Later in the meet she edged out Bridgeport swimmer Sara Savovic by nearly one second (5:14.92) to claim the 500 yard freestyle event. Her second place finish came behind Bridgeport’s Elena Shchekleina in the 200 yard butterfly as she swam a personal best time of 2:17.25 in the event.

Senior Stephanie Doran (Flowery Branch, Ga.), freshman Lauren Reynolds (St. Charles, Ill.) and freshman Kelsey Gouge (Snellville, Ga.) all posted first place finishes in two events each as well. Doran finished first in the 200 yard freestyle (1:55.38) and the 100 yard freestyle (53.04); while Reynolds swam first place times in the 100 yard backstroke (59.50) and 200 yard backstroke (2:08.68). Gouge earned her two first place finishes in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:06.24) as well as the 50 yard freestyle (24.20).

Freshman Morgan Burns (Hilton, N.Y.) was the only other Moc to win an individual event on the day as she swam a time of 2:29.62 to garner first place in the 200 yard breaststroke.

Besides their nine first place finishes in individual events, the Mocs were also victorious in the opening event on the day as the 200 yard medley relay team, consisting of Reynolds, Gouge, sophomore Catie Carden (Hixson, Tenn.) and  senior Anna McIntyre (Kansas City, Mo.), swam the meet opener in a time of 1:49.22.
