Crenshaw and Gouge Help Mocs to Three Wins on Day Two of SSC Championships

CLEARWATER â€" Three wins by Florida Southern, including individual titles by freshmen Alli Crenshaw and Kelsey Gouge, highlighted the Moccasins’ second day of competition at the Sunshine State Conference Championships, and allowed them to hold on to third place in the team standings. Altogether, Florida Southern either won or finished second in four of the five events held.

Florida Southern’s 200-yard freestyle relay team was up first Thursday, and it delivered a second-place finish behind the University of Tampa. The Spartans broke a meet record that the Moccasins had established last year, winning the race in 1:33.85 to finish 0.69 seconds ahead of the Mocs. That was the closest 200-yard freestyle relay race in the three years the conference meet has been held. The team of Gouge (Snellville, GA), and seniors Anna McIntyre (Kansas City, MO), Jordon Momsen (Wales, WI) and Stephanie Doran (Flowery Branch, GA) did have a season-best time of 1:34.54, however, which met the NCAA “B” qualifying standard.

Crenshaw then gave Florida Southern its first win of the day, and second of the meet, when she captured the 500-yard freestyle in a school-record time of 4:51.41. That bettered her previous mark, set in Thursday's prelims by a little under one second, and her best regular season time by more than 15 seconds. It was a little more than two seconds faster than Tampa’s Heather Glenday, and only three-tenths of a second off the meet record set by Nova Southeastern’s Erin Black last year. Black was third in this year’s race, while both Crenshaw and Glenday swam NCAA “A” qualifying times.

The Moccasins also got a consolation finals win from freshman Heather Burns (Lake City, FL) in the same event, with Burns clocking a “B” time of 5:01.58. That was actually faster than three of the swimmers in the main 500 freestyle finals.

After freshman Morgan Burns (Hilton, NY) gave the Mocs another “B” time in the 200-yard IM, where she placed third, day two of the championships ended with Gouge winning the 50 freestyle and Florida Southern also winning the 400 medley relay.

Gouge set the meet record in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.32 seconds, and Doran was third in 23.65. Tampa had the remaining top-five spots in the race, and all of those times were NCAA “B” cuts while giving the Spartans just enough points to take over first place in the team standings. McIntyre also won the consolation finals for the Moccasins.

In the 400-yard medley relay, Florida Southern won the league title for the third year in a row. The Moccasins’ time of 3:47.50 was only .05 seconds off their record time of a year ago, and it was enough to give them a win over Tampa by 2.52 seconds. Doran has helped the Mocs win each of the last two 400 medley relay conference championships, and did so this time by swimming the anchor leg. Freshmen Lauren Reynolds (St. Charles, IL) and Gouge started the race before sophomore Catie Carden (Hixson, TN) took over for the third phase. Their 3:47.50 was a “B” time for the NCAA finals.

Although Florida Southern has won four of the seven events in the meet so far, Tampa is still the overall leader with 367 points, and Nova Southeastern is second with 355. The Moccasins have 283 points, and Saint Leo is fourth with 131.

Day three of the championships is Friday, with one relay race followed by five individual races. For live coverage of the 2013 Sunshine State Conference Championships, as well as a full schedule of events please visit: http://www.sunshinestateconference.com/article.asp?articleID=1852
