TALLAHASSEE – Kelsey Gouge and Alli Crenshaw each had a pair of NCAA provisional qualifying times, including one race where each of them did it, and both seniors also helped one relay team achieve a "B" standard as well on the first day of a 2-day quad meet at Florida State.
In the first individual race of the day, Gouge and Crenshaw both had "B" times in the 200-freestyle, and sophomore Peyton Breault fell less than one second short. Gouge swam the race in 1:53.12 while competing in the 200 for the first time this year, and Crenshaw came in 1.42 seconds behind her, with Breault only 0.09 seconds behind Crenshaw, and freshman Rebeka Dics just 0.28 seconds behind Breault.
Gouge picked up second NCAA "B" time in the 50-freestyle at 23.98 seconds, and Crenshaw had her second one of the meet in the 500-freestyle at 5:00.57. They later teamed up with Dics and Breault for one more "B" time in the 400-freestyle relay, finishing third behind teams from Florida State and Florida Gulf Coast.
The Moccasins nearly got another "B" time in the 200-IM where sophomore Jacinda Whittenburg beat out all of the other Division II swimmers from Florida Southern and West Florida with a time of 2:07.80. That was 0.65 seconds off the mark she needed for a provisional time. Whittenburg was also the Mocs' top swimmer in the 200-breaststroke.
Other top swimmers for the Moccasins on day one were freshman Krystal Karas in the 200-butterfly, and junior Leah Haney in the 200-backstroke. Karas' time of 2:10.75 was almost five seconds faster than any Moccasin had posted in the first two meets of the season, and Haney's time was a career-best.
In Friday's only other race, the Moccasins also got a season-best time in the 200-medley relay from Lauren Reynolds, Haley DeGrace, Kourtney Gavin, and Britt Aubley.
The second day of the quad meet with Florida State, Florida Gulf Coast and West Florida begins Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
