TALLAHASSEE – For the second day in a row, seniors Alli Crenshaw and Kelsey Gouge posted NCAA provisional qualifying times, and the Moccasins nearly got three more as they wrapped up a 2-day quad meet at Florida State.
The Moccasins were competing head-to-head against two Division I schools, Florida State and Florida Gulf Coast, as well as the University of West Florida. Florida Southern's scores were calculated separately against all three with the Mocs' best results coming against fellow D-II opponent West Florida. The Argonauts came out ahead, 201-152, though the Moccasins came out of the weekend with NCAA provisional qualifying times in five individual events and one relay event.
On Saturday those times came from Crenshaw in the 1,000-freestyle and Gouge in the 100-breaststroke. Two other Moccasins, freshman Rebeka Dics and sophomore Jacinda Whittenburg did not miss by much, and the 200-freestyle relay team comprised of Gouge, Dics, freshman Krystal Karas and sophomore Britt Aubley also came up just a little shy of an NCAA "B" time.
The highest finish of the day belonged to Crenshaw, who placed fourth in the 1,000-freestyle with her time of 10:17.95. Florida Gulf Coast swimmers claimed first and third, and Florida State took second. In her only other individual race, Crenshaw was eighth in the 100-freestyle and was a little over half a second away from a provisional qualifying time there.
In achieving her NCAA "B" standard, Gouge had a fifth-place finish in the 100-breaststroke at 1:04.76. Overall, it was the Mocs' best race of the day with Whittenburg seventh and freshman Haley DeGrace ninth. Whittenburg clocked in at 1:05.41, leaving her only seven one-hundredths of a second away from another provisional time of her own.
Dics had another close call for the Moccasins in the 100-freestyle, and the 200-freestyle relay team was just 0.38 seconds away from a qualifying time.
The Moccasins' other top performers on Saturday were Karas in the 100-butterfly, and sophomore Peyton Breault in the 100-backstroke.
Florida Southern will be off from competition until December 18, when the Moccasins begin the 3-day Winter Invitational in Clearwater.
