Box Score TAMPA, Fla. – Florida Southern improved to 3-0 inside the Sunshine State Conference with a 22-7 blowout over the University of Tampa at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Intramural Complex Wednesday night.
The Moccasins (17-2, 3-0 SSC) scored a season-high 22 goals against the Spartans (5-11, 0-4 SCC), led by four each from senior Megan Asper (Parkton, Md.) and sophomore Kendall Kerge (Edgewater, Md.). Junior Ashley Robertson (Ellicott City, Md.) added three goals.
Senior Caitlin Chase, who finished with a game-high six points, added four assists to her career total, moving the Mt. Laurel, N.J., native into third place all-time in NCAA Division II with 205 in her career. With 341 career points, she also moved into a tie for 14th all-time.
The full-court defense employed by the Mocs in the first half led to 17 Tampa turnovers, nine caused by FSC. The Spartans successfully converted only five of their 12 clear attempts in the opening half as well.
Overall, the Mocs outgained UT 19-to-12 in draw controls and 23-to-14 in ground balls.
The Mocs scored the first nine goals and led by as much as 12 in the first half. They took their first 15-goal lead, 19-4, at 19:10 in the second half.
Asper and senior Lorianne Hoover (Annapolis, Md.) netted consecutive free position shots to make it 3-0 in favor of the Scarlet & White.
Junior defender Gabby Barowski (Alexandria, Va.) stripped Tampa freshman Christina Burroughs leading to a score by freshman Emily Santoli (Fort Salonga, N.Y.). Santoli won the ensuing draw control and Chase followed with her second goal of the game, making it a six-goal advantage for the Mocs.
Asper scored back-to-back goals at 9:10 and 6:50, the latter assisted by Cayla Shawfield. The freshman from Oviedo, Fla., assisted on the final three goals of the first half, all inside the last 1:19 of the period, as the Mocs jumped ahead 15-3 at the break.
Shawfield finished with four assists and five points, both career highs.
It took Santoli only 19 seconds to open the scoring in the second half, and Asper followed 1:16 later with her fourth and final goal of the contest. Robertson deposited the last two Moccasin goals at the 1:25 and 0:35 marks.
The Spartans scored four times in the second half, two coming off of the stick of freshman Amanda Rom. Rom provided most of the effort from UT on the night. She scored four goals on four shots and won a game-high eight draw controls.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Ashley Seborowski (Annapolis, Md.) made three saves in 30 minutes of playing time to earn her 15th win of the season. Sophomore Taylor Gillis (Bel Air, Md.) stopped four shots in the second half.
A win over Florida Tech (7-6, 1-1 SSC) in their regular-season finale on Saturday, April 18 at 1 p.m. will secure the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage for the Mocs in the inaugural SSC Tournament.
