Last-Second Comeback Nearly Rallies FSC Past Eckerd Before Tritons Hold on for 2-1 Win

Box Score

LAKELAND – With all of the scoring coming in the final 20 minutes of the game, Florida Southern's last-second comeback attempt sparked by sophomore Dominique Cirnigliaro fell a few seconds short, and Eckerd held on for a 2-1 win.

Eckerd (4-2-1, 1-2 Sunshine State Conference) took a 1-0 lead in the 71st minute when Taylor Tippett worked free inside the box for a shot from close range, and the Tritons made it 2-0 on a break-away goal by Monique Elliott in the 87th minute.

The Moccasins (1-4-1, 1-1) battled back in the closing minutes though after winning a corner kick. Freshman Kylie Harris took that kick for Florida Southern, sending it into the box where junior Sheila Ramos had the first opportunity to score for the Moccasins. Though she was unable to do so herself, Ramos did manage to get the ball to Cirnigliaro, who finished the play by slipping it inside the near post for her first goal of the season with 19 seconds remaining.

Although the Tritons had the chance to run the remaining time off the clock after the kickoff, they gave it right back to Florida Southern for one final frantic attack. Working the ball down the left flank, the Mocs again tried to get the ball into the box for Cirnigliaro, but it was beyond her reach and Eckerd goalkeeper Angelique Ulmer cleared it as time expired.

Ulmer made seven saves for Eckerd, and sophomore Helena Norrstrom made a season-high 11 for Florida Southern.

Eckerd out-shot Florida Southern 23-10, though many of those came from well outside the box.

Florida Southern's next game will be Wednesday September 30 at Tampa, with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
