Free Kick Goal by Eckerd Offsets Brilliant Defensive Effort by Mocs as Tritons Win Non-Conference Game 1-0

Box Score

LAKELAND – Florida Southern's back line turned in perhaps its best performance of the season by allowing just seven shots, but Eckerd used a free kick in the sixth minute to score the only goal of the night and defeat the Moccasins 1-0 in a non-conference game at Barnett Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Eckerd scored its goal at the 5:20 mark when freshman Ashley Kreinbring launched a long-distance free kick from near the right side line all the way into the far side of the net. It was her first goal of the season and it stood up for nearly 85 minutes as the Tritons (7-7-2) held on for the win.
  • Florida Southern's starting back line of Juliana Guida, Gaelyn Crowder, Becca Watson and Jess Goedde also got help from freshman Carly Faust who gave the Moccasins (1-7-1) 24 minutes off the bench at outside back in the second half. The seven shots allowed were the fewest by the Florida Southern defense since October 8, 2014, which resulted in another 1-0 loss to Eckerd in which the Tritons scored their only goal on a penalty kick.
  • Less than two minutes after scoring, Kreinbring sent another long-range free kick over the cross bar, and the Tritons' didn't have a shot in the run of play until Kayla Gray took one in the 41st minute. The Tritons had just four first-half shots and none of them came inside the 18-yard box.
  • Eckerd had three shots in the second half, and none of them came from inside 18 yards either. Florida Southern goalkeeper Helena Norrstrom had to make only one save in the game, easily stopping a shot by Kreinbring in the 55th minute.
  • The Moccasins had 10 shots and forced Eckerd goalkeeper Casey Winn into four saves. Senior Sheila Ramos and freshman Kaitlyn Svopa each had three shots, while four others took one.
  • The teams combined for only three corner kicks: two by Eckerd and one by Florida Southern.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • The Moccasins have now played 22 consecutive games decided by two goals or less, the longest such streak in team history by 10 games. Florida Southern is the only team in the Sunshine State Conference that has seen every one of its games this year decided by two goals or less.
  • Norrstrom lowered her goals against average to 1.33.
  • Wednesday night was only the second home game of the season for the Moccasins after two earlier cancellations due to weather and two postponements that will be made up next week. The fewest home games played by any of the other 263 Division II teams in the country was three, by Coker (SC), Fort Lewis (CO) and UNC-Pembroke. The Mocs, however, will play their final five games at home this year.
  • Eckerd has won four 1-0 games this year and also lost four. In addition to those eight contests the Tritons have one scoreless draw on their record too.
  • Florida Southern and Eckerd have now met 24 times, and each team has won 12.
  • Wednesday night's game was a non-conference match after the Moccasins won the earlier SSC game in St. Petersburg 1-0. It's the second year in a row the teams have played a non-conference game with each other.
  • There were five games played in the SSC Wednesday night (three conference and two non-conference), and those five games saw a total of six goals scored.

UP NEXT

  • Florida Southern remains at home for its next game Saturday night at 7 p.m. against Saint Leo University.
