Saint Leo Pulls Out 3-2 Win Over Florida Southern in Men's Soccer With 88th-Minute Free Kick

Box Score

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Florian Thumm scored once in the first half to give the Moccasins the lead, and Jonathan Radvogin scored once in the second half to give them another lead, but Saint Leo's Teddy Auyoma scored twice in the final 23 minutes to give Saint Leo a 3-2 win over Florida Southern Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Thumm scored the first goal of the night in the 27th minute by cutting across the top of the box and putting a shot into the top left corner of the net for his fifth goal of the season.
  • Florida Southern (6-5-1, 2-4-1 Sunshine State Conference) led 1-0 at halftime before Saint Leo (5-6, 3-4) tied the game a little over 11 minutes into the second half on a goal by Marcela Casas, assisted by Bafou Sanogo.
  • The Moccasins responded in the 66th minute when Radvogin picked up his fifth goal of the season with a shot that banked off the left post.
  • A little over two minutes later, Auyoma scored his first goal of the night after an attempted clearance. That tied the score at 2-2, and Auyoma would then provide the game-winner with 2:23 remaining on a direct free kick.
  • Neither team had another shot after Auyoma's second goal, but Florida Southern did have a corner kick in the 90th minute that gave them one final chance to force overtime.
  • Auyoma had five of Saint Leo's 13 shots, but Florida Southern's 11 were spread more evenly between eight different players.
  • Saint Leo edged out Florida Southern in total shots, 13-11, but Florida Southern had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Cole Clingerman had three saves for the Moccasins and James White had two for the Lions.

  • Saturday night was the 59th all-time meeting between Florida Southern and Saint Leo, with the Moccasins still leading the series 28-26-5.

  • Clingerman's three saves moved him into a fourth-place tie with Cliff Dixon (1995-97) on Florida Southern's career list.
