#17 Rollins Uses Two First-Half Goals to Defeat Florida Southern 2-0

Box Score

WINTER PARK – Playing their first nationally ranked opponent of the season, Florida Southern saw #17 Rollins score two first-half goals before the Moccasins and Tars played evenly in the second half and Rollins went on to win 2-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Rollins (8-1-1 overall, 4-0 in the Sunshine State Conference) took a 1-0 lead just 2:31 into the contest when Paxton Sickler scored on a feed from Kathryn O'Brien.
  • The Moccasins' first shot came from freshman Caitlin Quaempts in the 20th minute but it was saved by Rollins goalkeeper Kelly Rowswell.
  • Moccasin junior goalkeeper Helena Norrstrom made all three of her first-half saves in the 26th minute, two of them against O'Brien, but a fourth shot in that same sequence resulted in a goal by Emma Bloom, with O'Brien picking up her second assist of the night.
  • Rollins had just two more shots over the remainder of the first half, but neither was on target as the Tars took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
  • After the Tars outshot the Moccasins 10-2 in the first half they only held a 6-5 edge in the second. The Mocs held them to only four second-half shots before the Tars took two in the final 75 seconds.
  • Senior Sheila Ramos took four of Florida Southern's seven shots in the game and was responsible for two of Rowswell's three saves.
  • Norrstrom finished with four saves for Florida Southern (1-5-1, 1-4 SSC), with her only one in the second half coming in the 73rd minute.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • This year's score at Rollins was identical to the result of last year's meeting in Lakeland.
  • Six of the Moccasins' first seven games have been on the road this year due to problems with weather, and by the time they play at home again, that will have increased to eight of nine.
  • Ramos has already taken 21 shots this year, one more than she had all of 2015 and the most she's taken during any season of her 4-year career.

UP NEXT

  • Florida Southern's scheduled game this Saturday against Lynn has been postponed. Makeup information will be announced at a later date. It's the fourth home game the Moccasins have had either cancelled or postponed this year. The Moccasins will be on the road for two games next week, with the first Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Division I Florida Gulf Coast University.
