Moccasins Get Third Straight Relay All-American Award on Day Three of NCAA Finals

INDIANAPOLIS – With seniors Kelsey Gouge and Alli Crenshaw teaming up with sophomore Peyton Breault and freshman Rebeka Dics, Florida Southern's 800-freestyle relay team added its name to the All-American list Friday night as the Moccasins ended day three of the NCAA Division II National Swimming & Diving Championships in 17th place.

With only relay race on the schedule for Friday, the Moccasins made the most of their chance to score by finishing seventh in the 800-freestyle event. Gouge and Crenshaw swam the first two legs to put the Moccasins in position, Breault took the third leg and swam their fastest time, and Dics closed it down to clinch the All-American position for the Mocs. It was the third award of the week for Dics, who was on two honorable mention All-American relay teams Thursday.

In the four individual events scheduled for Friday, the Moccasins had qualifiers in three of them but were unable to get any of those swimmers into the finals. Crenshaw came the closest with an 18th-place finish in the 500-freestyle at 4:59.08, leaving her two spots and 0.76 seconds shy of advancing to the consolation finals. Breault was a little over three seconds behind her.

Senior Lauren Reynolds was the only Moccasin in the 100-backstroke and placed 23rd in prelims with a time of 57.23 seconds. That leaves her still with 20 All-American awards in her career.

The Moccasins had to back-to-back finishers in the prelims of the 100-breaststroke where Gouge and freshman Haley DeGrace were 22nd and 23rd, separated by 0.11 seconds. Gouge swam that race in 1:04.02, marking her best time of the season.

There were no Moccasin swimmers in the 200-butterfly, which was the final individual event of day three prior to the 800-freestyle relay.

The 24 points earned by the Moccasins in that race meant Florida Southern fell only one spot in the overall standings even with only one team or swimmer in Friday night's finals. Queens (NC) continues to lead the meet with 424 points, Wingate (NC) is second with 300, and Cal-San Diego is third with 243. Drury (MO) and Grand Valley State (MI) round out the top-five with 176½ and 196.

Nova Southeastern is the highest team from the Sunshine State Conference, and the only SSC team ahead of Florida Southern in 11th place with 104 points. The Moccasins have 59.

Saturday is the last day of the NCAA Finals, with prelims again starting at 10:30 a.m., and finals in five events Saturday night at 6 p.m.
