Box Score PENSACOLA – Florida Southern wrapped up its 2-game road trip to the northern Gulf Coast with a strong showing against one of the country's traditional Division II powers, but a West Florida goal with four seconds remaining gave the Argonauts a 2-1 win over the Moccasins. Florida Southern is now 0-1-1, while West Florida is 2-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- West Florida's first goal was scored by Kaley Ward in the 35th minute following a free kick by Sara Helgadottir in Florida Southern territory. Ward scored after the ball was initially played by Emily Vogler and bounced off the cross bar.
- The Moccasins tied the game in the 60th minute on a goal by Anna Griessler, who headed a ball into the net after it had been sent to the back post by Sheila Ramos. It was the second time on the road trip a goal by Griessler was set up with a play made by Ramos.
- The game was stopped by lightning with 19:44 remaining in the second half and delayed by a little over one hour.
- After play resumed, West Florida out-shot Florida Southern 11-1, with Sara Helgadottir scoring the game-winning goal for the Argonauts. That came only a few seconds after freshman Alyssa Barden had a shot saved by West Florida goalkeeper Katelyn Burkhart.
- Neither Barden nor freshman Caitlin Quaempts started the game but each of them played more than 60 minutes off the bench.
- Junior goalkeeper Helena Norrstrom made 10 saves for Florida Southern while Burkhart made one for West Florida.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Sunday's game was the 15th all-time meeting between Florida Southern and West Florida, making the Argonauts the most common non-conference opponent the Moccasins have faced. They did not play in 2014 or 2015, however, with their last encounter ending in a scoreless tie in Lakeland in 2013. That game was also stopped by lightning in the 88th minute, but was never resumed.
- West Florida leads the all-time series 12-2-1, but the series is dead even over the last five meetings with each team picking up two wins in addition to the tie in 2013, and the Mocs holding a 9-8 edge in scoring.
- Griessler is only the second Moccasin in the last eight years to score a goal in each of the first two games of the season. Kirra Rainbow did it in 2014. No Moccasin has ever had a goal in three straight games to start a season.
- Dating back to last year, Griessler has scored five goals in her last four games, and Ramos has assisted or created four goals during that span.
- Norrstrom had her fifth career game with 10 or more saves.
- Former West Florida Argonaut Dominique Cirnigliaro played as a reserve against her former team and had one of Florida Southern's five shots in the game.
UP NEXT
- Florida Southern continues will play its first Sunshine State Conference game of the season on Wednesday at Nova Southeastern. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
