Griessler Scores Again as Florida Southern Wins at Eckerd 1-0

Box Score

ST. PETERSBURG – Anna Griessler scored her third goal of the season, Helena Norrstrom recorded her first shutout, and head coach Siggi Nagele got his first win as Florida Southern's head coach against his former team as the Moccasins out-lasted Eckerd 1-0 Wednesday night. The win gives Florida Southern a 1-2-1 overall record and a 1-1 mark in the Sunshine State Conference, while Eckerd is now 5-4 overall and 1-2 in the SSC.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Griessler scored the only goal of the night exactly 14 minutes into the game off a pass from freshman Kaitlyn Svopa. The assist was the first of Svopa's career.
  • Norrstrom made five saves in posting her first career shutout. Her only save in the first half came on a shot by Ashley Kreinbring in the second minute, and she did not have to make another until the 70th minute. She then made two more in the final six minutes to give the Mocs their first shutout since a scoreless tie at Tampa on September 24, 2014.
  • The Moccasins would out-shoot the Tritons 9-2 in the first half, but only 8-7 in the second half.
  • The nine shots allowed were a season-low for the Florida Southern defense with Juliana Guida, Gaelyn Crowder, Becca Watson and Jess Goedde the starting backs, and Alyssa Barden and Carly Faust providing minutes in a reserve role.
  • All three of Griessler's shots in the game were on target. Sheila Ramos and Jess Goedde also had three of the 17 shots for the Moccasins, with each of those players forcing one save.
  • Delaney Riggins nearly scored another goal of the Mocs early in the second half but hit the post. Riggins led the Moccasin reserves with 44 minutes in the game.
  • Casey Winn made five saves for Eckerd, which was coming off a 1-0 win over #14 Florida Tech.
  • The game was stopped early in the first half for bad weather, the fifth time in seven games this year such an event has played a role in one of Florida Southern's games.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Prior to coming to Florida Southern, Nagele served as Eckerd's head coach from 1996-02, with their first on-field season in 1997. He is still the all-time wins leader in Eckerd women's soccer history with 52.
  • Florida Southern moved ahead 12-11 in the all-time series between the teams. Four of the last six meetings have ended with 1-0 scores, with Florida Southern winning two and Eckerd winning two.
  • Griessler has now scored four goals against Eckerd in her brief career. She had a hat trick last year in a non-conference game at Eckerd which the Mocs won 4-2.
  • Due to weather cancelling three home games, Florida Southern has now played six straight true road games dating back to last year, the longest such streak in team history. The Mocs once played nine straight away from home spanning the 2008 and 2009 seasons, but five of those games were at neutral sites.

UP NEXT

  • The Moccasins will be off this weekend with a bye on their schedule and hope to play their first home game on Wednesday, September 28 when they are scheduled to play Tampa at 7 p.m. Their first three home games have been cancelled or postponed by inclement weather.
