Box Score AUBURNDALE, FL – A goal by Lynn University on a corner kick in the 78th minute was the only one either team could muster in a game played entirely in the rain, but even with the 1-0 loss, Florida Southern still earned a spot in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament. Moments after falling to the No. 19 team in the country, the Moccasins learned Barry had lost to Eckerd, pushing Florida Southern through for the first time in four years.
The combination of results Saturday night left Florida Southern (7-6, 5-5) as the sixth seed, while Lynn (10-3-1, 6-3-1) jumped up to third. They'll now face each other again Tuesday night in Boca Raton at a time to be determined.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lynn scored the only goal with 12:27 remaining when Alun Webb sent a corner kick to the back post for a header by Stefan Strohmaier.
- Florida Southern out-shot Lynn 15-11, and four of those shots came after the Knights took the lead. Christoph Gums took one in the 82nd minute that was saved by Alexander Roth, and Jacob Ling-Vannerus had one saved by Roth in the 85th. Carl Spansk and Rene Rivera also had good looks at the goal in the 85th and 87th minutes but were unable to connect.
- Georg Michajlov had an active night too for the Mocs, and a thru ball played to him by Gums in the 72nd minute forced Roth to come out of the net to stop the shot just inside the box.
- The Mocs' best chance to score in the first half may have been in the 27th minute by Dani Morillo. Set up by a well-place freek kick by Romain Voirin, Morillo got free inside the box but had his shot blocked by Lynn defender Luca Puster.
- Roth made four saves for Lynn and Benny Yusufoglu made two for Florida Southern. Both of Yusufoglu's were difficult plays, one against Storhmaier in the 53rd minute and the other against Webb in the 77th. That one came at close range after Webb had maneuvered into position for a shot inside the 6-yard box at the near post.
