100th Minute Free Kick Gives Lynn 1-0 Win over Florida Southern in SSC Tournament Quarterfinals

Box Score

BOCA RATON – Three days after nearly knocking off the No. 19 ranked team in the country at the end of the regular season, Florida Southern (7-7) got another chance to take on Lynn in the quarterfinal round of the 2017 Sunshine State Conference Tournament. However, the Knights (11-3-1) once again found a way to win, this time using a free kick at the end of the first overtime period to defeat the Moccasins 1-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The only goal of the night came off the foot of Alun Webb, who blasted a direct free kick from just outside the box into the net with 54 seconds to play in the first sudden death period. It was the eighth goal of the season for Webb, who also assisted the goal on Saturday night that gave Lynn another 1-0 win over Florida Southern.
  • In their meeting three nights earlier, Florida Southern out-shot Lynn 15-11, the most shots allowed this year by one of the stingiest defensive units in the country. The Mocs nearly reached that total again Tuesday night with 14, and were out-shooting the Knights 14-9 at the end of regulation.
  • The Moccasins also forced Lynn goalkeeper Alexander Roth into seven saves, not only the most he's made this season, but a number that represents 20 percent of his season total.
  • Benny Yusufoglu made three saves for Florida Southern, one in each half, and one in overtime. The first of those came following a corner kick in the 31st minute, and the second was on another header off a free kick in the 88th. In overtime it was yet another header off a corner kick in the 97th minute. That meant the only four shots Lynn put on target during the game came on set pieces.
  • Foster Appiah had five of Florida Southern's 14 shots, and Georg Michajlov had three. Michajlov put all three of his on target too, just one less than the total number Lynn had as a team.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Five of Florida Southern's seven losses this year were to nationally ranked opponents, and all five were by a single goal.
  • The last four meetings between Florida Southern and Lynn have ended with 1-0 scores. The Knights have won the last three, and the Moccasins won in 2015.
  • Florida Southern allowed more than one goal in only two of its 14 games this year for an .857 percentage, that stands as the best in the program's 61-year history. The previous high as .850 in 1999 when the Mocs did that in 17 of 20 games.
  • Florida Southern's 1.14 goals against average this year is the team's best in 16 years and the fourth lowest the Mocs have ever posted. Yusufoglu finished with a 0.92 individual GAA, which ranks third in the team record book behind Cliff Dixon's 0.61 in 1997, and Johan Linell's 0.74 in 1999. His .800 save percentage is fifth best all-time at Florida Southern, and both those numbers are the best in team history for a freshman.
