Florida Tech Rallies for 2-1 Win over Florida Southern in Men's Soccer

MELBOURNE, FL – Christoph Gums scored for Florida Southern with help from James Smith less than seven minutes into the game, but 24th-ranked Florida Tech tied the score midway through the first half and went ahead midway through the second for a 2-1 win over the Moccasins.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Florida Southern (4-3, 2-2 Sunshine State Conference) took a 1-0 lead on its first shot of the game when Gums scored his third goal of the season 6:50 into play, with Smith picking up his third assist. Gums then had another shot in the eighth minutes saved by Christopher Page, and an attempt by Tobias Rodriguez Brindicci was too high in the 23rd.
  • Florida Tech (6-1, 3-0) tied the score in the 25th minute on a goal by Per Henrik Nag, his fourth of the season, which came on one of the Panthers' six first-half shots. Three of those came in the final four minutes, but the game remained tied at 1-1 going into the break.
  • In the second half, the Moccasins threatened in the 50th minute when Daniel Moore and Romain Voirin had shots saved by Page, and the Panthers' Luca Campanini had a shot stopped by Benny Yusufoglu in the 50th minute as well.
  • Florida Tech took the lead in the 70th minute when Solomon Wheatley scored his second goal of 2017.
  • The Moccasins had two corner kicks after falling behind, but neither team would manage a shot in the final 20 minutes, leaving the score at 2-1.
  • The Panthers out-shot the Moccasins 14-6 in the game, with Yusufoglu making three saves for Florida Southern and Page four for Florida Tech. The Mocs had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Gums and Voirin each had two of Florida Southern's six shots, and each player put both of them on target. Gums now has a team-high three goals and 12 points on the season.
  • Florida Tech was the second nationally ranked team Florida Southern has faced this year. The other was another SSC opponent on the road, with the Mocs falling to No. 20 Rollins on September 20.
  • Florida Tech qualified for the NCAA Tournament last year and is ranked No. 4 in the South Region coaches' poll in addition to its No. 24 national ranking. Florida Southern was No. 7 in the South Region.
  • The last eight meetings between Florida Southern and Florida Tech have been decided by one goal or ended in a tie. The Panthers now lead the all-time series 30-19-4.
