Mocs Fall to Barry at Home

LAKELAND, Fla. – Rachael Martin continued her offensive prowess but Florida Southern College volleyball fell to Barry, 3-0, on Friday night at Streamline Sale Arena at Jenkins Field House. The Moccasins (5-15, 1-9 SSC) fought valiantly in the third set but were unable to prevent the Buccaneers (14-7, 7-3 SSC) from taking the first matchup between the two sides this season. The Mocs continue SSC play at home on Saturday at 4 p.m. against Palm Beach Atlantic and end their four-match homestand on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Saint Leo.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Florida Southern started out the match with two quick kills from Annie Collins and Raeley Matthews. From there Barry would rally and the two sides would post tie scores from points seven to 10. The Buccaneers went on a 7-1 run to go ahead 16-11 and held on to take set one, 25-17.
  • The Bucs took command of set two early with a 14-3 run, but the Mocs responded with a 5-2 run of their own. The two sides alternated points and Barry held on to take set two, 25-14.
  • Set three saw a close, back-and-forth affair that had eleven tie scores and six lead changes
  • Erica Ronda led the Mocs with nine kills, followed by Buse Ene with eight and Martin with seven kills. Collins tallied 30 assists while Beatrice Formilan had 20 digs, trailed by Collins with 11 and Ronda with 10. Anica Popadic recorded two service aces and Matthews and Ronda each recorded one.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Despite the loss the Moccasins still lead the all-time series, 40-35. The Moccasins are also 22-12 in Lakeland and have a 13-2 record at home since 2005.
  • Martin hit .429 for the night, making it five matches in a row that she has hit above .364. Since Oct.18, Martin has hit .407, with 51 kills and a 3.00 kills per set average.
  • Formilan has also excelled in the same time frame on the defensive side, tallying 92 digs in the last five matches, averaging 5.41 digs per set.

UP NEXT

  • Southern will finish its four-game homestand as they host Palm Beach Atlantic at 4 p.m. on Saturday and Saint Leo at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
