Box Score WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Florida Southern College volleyball fell 3-1 to Palm Beach Atlantic University on Friday night at the Rubin Arena. The Moccasins (7-22, 3-16 SSC) rallied to take set three but could not stop a potent Sailfish (17-13, 9-10 SSC) offense that hit just short of .300 for the night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- PBA started off the match with eight-straight points that included three kills from Jazz Schmidt. The Sailfish held onto their lead for the remainder of the set, taking set one, 25-13.
- Florida Southern started set two on the right foot, earning a 6-1 run after a 4-4 start to the set to take a 10-5 lead. The Moccasin lead would hover around four until the 15-11 mark when the 'Fish earned nine of the next 13 points to take their second lead of the set at 20-19. The Mocs briefly regained momentum with a 23-21 scoreline but four unanswered points from the Sailfish gave them a set two victory at 25-23.
- Set three saw the 'Fish streak out to a 6-1 lead that stretched to a seven-point buffer at the 18-11 mark. From there the Moccasins poured on the points, earning a 12-4 run to take their first lead of the set at 23-22. The set was pushed past 25 as the Mocs earned three set points and the Sailfish one set point, with the former preventing the three-set sweep with a 28-26 third-set victory.
- Palm Beach Atlantic cruised in set four with a 14-5 start that gave them a comfortable margin. The 'Fish held on to take the set, 25-14, and the match, 3-1.
- Ali Travis led the Moccasins with 14 kills while Tierra Porter had a team-high .286 hitting percentage. Three Moccasins earned double-digit digs as Beatrice Formilan (23), Hailey Williams (12) and Travis (10) all contributed to the team's 68 digs. The Mocs had nine service aces, with Williams and Travis each tallying three.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Palm Beach Atlantic now leads the all-time series, 12-10.
- Travis has recorded double-digit kills in eight of her last nine matches. She has tallied 138 kills in 36 sets, good for a 3.83 kills per set average.
- Formilan has totaled 273 digs in the past 14 matches, hitting double figures in each contest and averaging 5.15 digs per set. She is one match away from her season average of 4.84 digs per set placing her fourth in program history for a single season behind leader Courtney Veasey's 2004 season (5.33), Gabby Fresh in 2018 (4.92) and Brindl Langley in 2017 (4.91).
