FSC Men's Soccer Earns 1-1 Tie With No. 6 Palm Beach Atlantic

Box Score

LAKELAND, FLA. – The Florida Southern College men's soccer team earned a hard fought 1-1 draw with the No. 6 ranked Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish on Saturday night, in a match played before 409 fans at Moccasin Field. It was the conference opener for both programs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Florida Southern dominated the game's opening minutes, pressuring the visiting Sailfish. FSC (1-2-2) was whistled for an offsides violation just five minutes in, before earning a corner kick in the ninth minute of the contest.
  • The Mocs continued to play stalwart defense, countering PBA (4-0-1) whenever possible.
  • In the 44th minute, the counter-attack of the Red and White paid off. Senior Jacob Ling-Vannerus took advantage of a misplay on the PBA back line, setting up a 1 v 1 with the keeper. With PBA's last line of defense charging hard, Ling-Vannerus deftly slid the ball past the keeper and into the lower right corner of the goal.
  • As the second half began, both teams had opportunities, probing deep into the attack zone, only to be thwarted defensively.
  • Eventually PBA broke through. At the 73:49 mark, Charlie Lewis headed a Gian Scalise pass past Philip Faderl to knot the game at one apiece.
  • The game began to get testy, as yellow cards started to accumulate.
  • In the first overtime, PBA has the strongest opportunity as Claudio Rivadeneira found himself in front of an open FSC goal during a scrum, only to have his best effort cleared off the goal line by Santiago Erazo.
  • In the second overtime, an inspired PBA club pressed hard, but the Mocs back line stiffened.
  • Of note defensively for the Mocs tonight were Foster Appiah, Santiago Erazo, Claus Lehland, and Henry Phillips.
