No. 8 Mocs Women's Lacrosse Beats Defending National Champ and Current No. 1 Adelphi, 8-4

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Southern College women's lacrosse program pulled off a major upset on Thursday night, beating defending national champion and current No. 1 Adelphi, 8-4, in the home opener. The Mocs, ranked No. 8 in the IWLCA national poll, raced out to an 8-0 lead at the half en route to the stunning victory.

Florida Southern is now 2-1 on the year, while Adelphi drops to 1-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

1st Half 

  • Florida Southern scored quickly, taking a 1-0 lead just 6:07 into the game, when senior midfielder Catherine DeKorte scored an unassisted goal.
  • Minutes later, senior attack Ashley Norberg took a feed from classmate Grace Glinecki and made the score 2-0. A minute and a half later, senior Riley Bannatyne scored the first of her two goals on the game to make the score 3-0.
  • Glinecki would score a free position goal at 14:01, followed by the eventual game-winner from freshman attack Sammy Gorrasi at 13:21.
  • Bannatyne, sophomore Brenna Smith, and Gorrasi all scored again in the first half, as the Mocs led 8-0 after the first 30 minutes.
  • Sophomore goalie Patricia Werker made six saves in the first half, making several key stops.
  • For the first half, Southern out-shot Adelphi 15-9.

2nd Half 

  • Florida Southern's defense continued to control the aggressive Adelphi attack. Senior defenders Jill Boehmcke and Sara Tomasello, and junior defender Abby Hammond all played exceptionally well for the Mocs.
  • The Panthers were finally able to get on the board at the 12:33 mark of the second half, on an unassisted goal from 2019 Division II Player of the Year Kole Pollock.
  • Pollock would score the next two for Adelphi, before the Panthers would add a fourth goal with 14 seconds remaining for the 8-4 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Six different Mocs scored tonight, though only two scored more than once. Both Bannatyne and Gorrasi had two goals apiece.
  • The Red and White converted two of their six free position attempts into goals, while AU came up empty in seven tries.
  • Assists came from Glinecki, Gorrasi, and junior Maliah Benedetto.
  • For the game, Adelphi out-shot Southern, 22-19.
  • Werker finished the game with 11 saves to earn her second win of the year.
  • Southern's midfield unit made a difference in the transition game, as the Mocs had 27 successful clears on 28 attempt. Southern went15-for-15 in the first half.
  • Bannatyne and Smith are tied for the team lead with seven goals apiece.
  • Werker lowered her goals against average to 7.95.
