FSC Women's Basketball Beats PBA in Regular Season Finale

PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Florida Southern College women's basketball team (18-10, 15-5 SSC) sealed the third seed in the upcoming Sunshine State Conference Championships, by defeating Palm Beach Atlantic (4-23, 2-18 SSC), 68-41, in the regular season finale.

The Mocs will now host No. 6 Florida Tech on Tuesday, March 3, at 5:30 p.m., in the Quarterfinal Round of the SSC Championships.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• 1st Quarter | PBA opened the scoring in the first quarter, with a jumper at the 7:48 mark. From there, it was all Florida Southern. The Mocs scored the next 13 points to close out the quarter. Junior Julia Jenike sank a three pointer to give the Mocs a 4-1 lead, a lead they would never relinquish. Sophomore Mackenzie Steele made a triple next, followed by layups from sophomore forward Ashley Shell, senior Katerina Pazzaglia-Khomenko, and sophomore Bekki Kalaydjiev.

• 2nd Quarter | The Mocs would built a 15-4 lead midway through the second quarter, on a Steele jumper. Minutes later, Southern led 25-9 on a Pazzaglia-Khomenko layup at the 4:08 mark. Shell would make a layup with five seconds remaining before halftime, making the score 34-13.

• 3rd Quarter | Southern would extend the lead to 22 points on a jumper from Jenike midway through the third period. The Mocs would lead 48-27 after three.

• 4th Quarter | The Mocs would reach the 60-point threshold on a Kalaydjiev jumper with 6:47 remaining in the game. Florida Southern would eventually win 68-41.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Four different Florida Southern players scored at least 10 points, led by Steele's 17 points, followed by Jenike with 14, and Pazzaglia-Khomenko and Kalaydjiev with 12 apiece.
  • PBA out-rebounded Florida Southern, 41-36. Jenike led FSC with eight caroms.
  • FSC's defense held the Sailfish to just 28.8% shooting. PBA also turned the ball over 32 times.
  • Jenike scored 14 points tonight, bringing her career to 919 points, including her freshman year at Florida Atlantic.
