Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. – Florida Southern College men's lacrosse set a program record with 65 total shots in a loss. The Moccasins (2-3) recorded 15 or more shots in each quarter as they dropped a midweek contest to the College of Saint Rose (3-0), 15-9, on Wednesday night at Moccasin Field.
Junior Kevin Horwitz ties the program record for the most face-off wins in a single game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 1st Quarter | Junior transfer Edward May put the Mocs up 1-0 at the 13:33 mark of the first quarter. Two minutes later Saint Rose would score a man-up goal to tie the game at 1-1. This would spark a 3-0 over the next seven minutes as the visiting team grew their lead to 3-1.
- Horwitz would win the subsequent faceoff and feed sophomore attack Sean Nolan who would find the back of the net to pull the home team within one just three seconds after the Golden Knights scored.
- Saint Rose would get the two-goal lead back as a minute later. Senior Kevin Dyer scored the third goal for the Mocs with 2:07 remaining in the opening 15 minutes. Southern would trail 4-3 heading into the second quarter.
- 2nd Quarter | At the 12:23 mark of the second quarter sophomore attack, Jeff Atlas tied the game at 4-4 as he took a feed from freshman Thomas Frank. Saint Rose would counter with two more goals to go up 6-4 at the 9:06 mark.
- May tacked on another goal for the Mocs to pull within one, 6-5 Saint Rose. However, as the visitors applied the pressure they would score the final three goals of the second quarter to take a 9-5 lead into the halftime break.
- 3rd Quarter | The defenses came out strong in the early part of the third quarter as Saint Rose would score the quarters' first goal at 7:32 to take a 10-5 lead. Southern would gain some momentum as sophomore Lucas Sommers found the back of the net and Nolan scored a man-up goal to cut the visitors lead to three.
- Saint Rose would get a pair of goals to close out the third quarter as they took a 12-7 lead into the final 15 minutes.
- 4th Quarter | A pair of goals from Frank to open the fourth quarter would help cut the Golden Knights lead to three at 12-9 with 11:17 left play. Southern would concede three goals to close out the game as the final score read 15-9 in favor of Saint Rose.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Mocs fired off a season-high 65 shots, 25 of which were on goal. Saint Rose was a little more selective with its shot selection as 21 of its 33 shots were on goal.
- Horwitz dominated the face-off X as he won all 26 faceoffs on the night. With 26 on the night, he tied the program's record for most face-off wins in a single game as Andrew Fisher has 26 on March 22, 2015, against Adams State.
- Nine total penalties were called in the game tonight as Saint Rose was whistled for six for a total of four minutes. Southern got called for three penalties for a total time of 2:30.
- Southern also had a dominant edge in groundballs, 38-24, including 14 for Horwitz.
- Nolan, May, and Frank all recorded two goals. Senior Joe Appio was one of six to record an assist and the only one to record more than one. Frank and May led the Mocs with three points.
