Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. – The No. 7 Florida Southern College women's lacrosse returned to its winning ways as they defeated the Wingate University Bulldogs, 19-7 on Wednesday afternoon. Southern (4-3) saw three different players record hat tricks in the win over Wingate (1-4).
Senior's Sarah Grady and Riley Bannatyne, and freshman Madison Tare all scored three goals in the victory on Wednesday afternoon on Moccasin Field. Senior's Marina Jozokos, Julia Couch and Ashley Norberg, and sophomore Brenna Smith all recorded a pair of goals each.
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Half
- Wingate's Leah Knowles put her team up 1-0 just 78 seconds into the game. However, Southern's string of the next four goals, two from Norberg, and one apiece from Smith and Couch helped the home team jump out to a commanding 4-1 lead, just five minutes into the game.
- The Bulldogs would cut the Mocs leads to two at the 23:40 mark of the first half. Southern would use a 3-0 run to take a 7-2 lead that included a women up goal from junior Maliah Benedetto at the 20:55 mark of the first half.
- The senior duo of Grady and Couch added goals four minutes apart to push the Mocs lead to 9-3 with 5:30 remaining in the opening 30 minutes.
- Florida Southern would lead 9-4, at the half, as the Bulldogs added another goal in the final four minutes of the half.
2nd half
- Grady opened the second half with a goal to put the Mocs back up by six.
- Bannatyne would ferociously score the next three goals for the home team to give her team a 13-4 lead.
- The Bulldogs would cut the Mocs lead down to eight at 21:53. The reigning Sunshine State Conference player of the week, Jozokos would follow that up with the next two goals for Southern just nine seconds apart as she would turn on the running clock to make the score 15-5 in favor of the home team.
- Over the next eight minutes, Wingate would record a pair of goals including a woman down goal to turn off the running clock making it a 15-7 FSC lead. Southern would score the final four goals of the game over the final eight and a half minutes as Tare recorded a career-high three goals. Junior attack Molly Berend would add her third goal of the season as the Mocs ended the game with a 19-7 final score.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Southern is now 2-0 all-time against Wingate with victories in both Wingate, in 2019, and Lakeland.
- Florida Southern had three student-athletes record three goals each. Tare recorded her first career multi-goal game. In all, seven Moccasins recorded multiple goals in the victory.
- All six assists for the home team were recorded by different players.
- Sophomore goalie Patricia Werker started the game and made four saves before senior Alanna Zambetti came in in relief to make a save and she was followed by junior Brittany Iamele who closed out the final 15 minutes in goal for the Mocs.
- The Mocs nearly dominated every stat category as they won 21 of the 28 draw controls, totaled 36 shots, and recorded seven goals off free position shots. Each team had 18 successful clears as Southern had 20 chances and Wingate had 25 on the day. The home team picked up two more ground balls than the visitors as they totaled 16 to the Bulldogs 14. The Mocs had 19 turnovers to the 21 by Wingate.
