WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Mackenzie Petermann continued to put up big numbers with another outstanding individual performance on Saturday, but it wasn't enough for the Florida Southern College volleyball team in a 3-0 loss against Palm Beach Atlantic University.
PBA (6-8, 2-4 SSC) swept the Mocs (6-4, 3-3 SSC) on their home court inside Rubin Arena by scores of 25-20, 25-19, and 25-21. Despite the loss, Petermann led all FSC players with 16 kills against just three errors, resulting in a superb .448 attack percentage. It marks the fourth time in five appearances this season that the Richmond Hill, Georgia, native has reached double-digit kills.
How It Happened
- Although the Mocs were unable to take a set from the Sailfish, FSC's attack performed well.
- Florida Southern produced a team attack percentage of .242, the second-highest of any match in 2021.
- In addition to Petermann, senior middle blocker Tierra Porter was efficient with six kills on 12 swings for a .500 clip.
- The first set was tight early, as a solo block from Emily Crescenzi tied the score at 5-5.
- However, an error on the following serve gave PBA the lead for good.
- The Sailfish then started the second set with six unanswered points, forcing the Mocs to battle back.
- FSC came within three points on a few occasions, including at 19-16 following a Petermann kill, but the Mocs wouldn't get any closer in the second.
- Southern started the third on the right foot, getting another block from Crescenzi to jump ahead, 4-2.
- The Sailfish then pulled ahead by as many as five points, but a double-block from Zoe Lowe and Crescenzi sparked a five-point run that tied the score at 17-all.
- Serving and service receptions, which were a sore spot for the Mocs against the Sailfish, helped PBA break the 17-17 stalemate and seal the third; PBA won the next two points on a Florida Southern service error and an ace from Lauren Cummings.
Inside the Numbers
- The Mocs had higher attack percentages in the first (.226-to-.207) and third sets (.300-to-.250).
- FSC also had more total blocks, 7-to-6.
- The Sailfish held the advantage in aces (9-to-4) and committed fewer service errors (10-to-3).
- Petermann's 16 kills were one shy of the match high, as Palm Beach Atlantic received 17 kills from Schmidt.
- Porter's .500 attack percentage marked her best of the fall campaign.
- Crescenzi led all Mocs with four total blocks, while Porter logged a pair of solo rejections.
- In her first start of the season, freshman setter Devinn Bell recorded 24 assists, six digs, two kills, and one block.
