WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The women's volleyball team win three straight sets to take down Valdosta State in the last game of the SSC/GSC Crossover tournament Saturday afternoon.
Florida Southern (10-8, 6-5) won each set in a commanding fashion as the team was consistent in maintaining the lead. The Blazers (11-14, 4-5) provided a challenge in the first set with a late comeback, but the Mocs sealed the first set and stayed in control. Florida Southern continued the pressure and the points continued, as they took the next two sets for a clean 3-0 match win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET: Florida Southern 25, Valdosta State 22
The Mocs started with strong work in the first few points, with kills by
Mackenzie Petermann and
Emily Crescenzi. Florida Southern had a 12-5 lead nearly halfway through the first set, which the Blazers could not catch up. Valdosta State had a 5-1 run late to get within one, but Petermann and Crescenzi closed the door allowing the Mocs to take set one.
SECOND SET: Florida Southern 25, Valdosta State 19
After a back-and-forth point game, the Mocs had a 5-1 run to garner a 17-12 lead.
Erica Ronda and
Ali Travis joined in on the 12 kills in set two as the team kept their foot on the pedal.
Beatrice Formilan had a service ace halfway through, with Travis earning the kill for the set point.
THIRD SET: Florida Southern 25, Valdosta State 17
Florida Southern seals the match win after a game-high 14 kills in set three. With few errors and steady movement, the Mocs stayed even at first, but finished with a 4-0 run. Crescenzi, Ronda, Petermann had the kills, with a service ace by
Devinn Bell.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Mocs had three service aces in the first set, with seven total aces in the match
- Petermann led the team with 11 kills, as Travis and Crescenzi each had nine
