Box Score MIAMI SHORES — Florida Southern College's men's basketball team was dealt a setback in its Sunshine State Conference opener against Barry with a 107-93 loss on Saturday evening.
The Mocs (1-2) were led by freshman
Jadin Booth's career-high 23 points as five other teammates finished in double-digit scoring.
E.J. Dambreville had his second consecutive double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds,
Xavier Rhodes had 19 points,
Tarik Mckelphin put in 14,
Babatunde Ajike had 11 and
Jack Casale scored 10.
"All the credit goes to Barry today, said head coach,
Mike Donnelly. "Our guys battled, but we never were able to put together consistent defensive stops. We have to regroup quickly and get ready to play a very good USC-Aiken team in our home opener Tuesday night."
FIRST HALF
- Florida Southern got out to a 5-2 lead on a lay-up by Ajike with 18:23 left.
- Barry went on a 14-0 run to take a 16-5 lead with 14:33 remaining.
- Booth ended a more than 4-minute scoring drought with a 3-pointer to make it 15-8 with 13:54 left.
- Mckelphin's fast-break bucket with 8:13 left cut the Barry lead to single digits at 32-23.
- Dambreville picked up his third foul and missed the rest of the half with 6:18 remaining and the Mocs trailing 32-25.
- Ajike hit a 3-pointer with 3:52 remaining to bring the Mocs to within five points at 37-32.
- Barry used an 13-0 run to take its largest lead of the game at 50-32 with 1:05 left.
- Mckelphin made a lay-up with 45 seconds left to end the run and put the Mocs down 50-34.
- Barry took a 52-34 lead into halftime.
- Mckelphin led the Mocs with 8 points, with Dambreville grabbing six rebounds to lead the way on the boards.
- Florida Southern shot just 37 percent from the field.
SECOND HALF
- Barry hit a 3-pointer to build their biggest lead to 55-34.
- Dambreville answered with a 3 of his own to cut it back to 18 at 55-37 early in the half.
- Rhodes finished off an 8-0 run by himself with a 3-pointer to make it at 62-52 with 14:32 left.
- A 3-pointer by Booth cut into a big Barry lead to make it 81-65 with 10:15 left.
- Booth hit his fifth 3-pointer of the game to keep the Mocs within striking distance at 92-78 with 7:04 left.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Booth finished 6-for-8 from 3-point range, as the freshman recorded career-highs in 3-pointers made and points at Florida Southern.
- With the loss it ends a 5-game winning streak for Florida Southern over Barry.
- This is the first time since Feb. 3, 2018, the Mocs have given up more than 100 points to Barry, the last being a 109-100 win.
- Barry's 107 points ties an all-time high against Florida Southern, last achieved on Jan. 3, 2015 in a 107-102 win in Lakeland.
- Barry scored 21 points off 15 Florida Southern turnovers.
