LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Southern College volleyball team fell to 13-10 on the season, and 9-7 inside the Sunshine State Conference, with a hard-fought 3-1 loss to Lynn University on Saturday afternoon. Playing at home on Family Weekend, the Mocs fall to fifth place in the SSC, just behind Lynn (15-11; 10-6 SSC).
Set scores were 25-24, 15-25, 25-18, and 25-19, as seniors
Tierra Porter and
Mackenzie Petermann each had 14 kills.
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Set | The Mocs and Fighting Knights were locked throughout the afternoon, and the first set set that tone. FSC was ahead 20-16, on a kill by Porter, followed by an ace from
Beatrice Formilan and a kill by Petermann. The Mocs led 22-16. Southern would eventually lead 24-17, before eight straight points claimed the set victor for the visiting Knights.
2nd Set | The second set saw the Mocs jump out to a 7-3 lead early on, on another Porter kill. A 5-0 run would eventually push the lead to 15-7. Later, up 19-15, Florida Southern got a kill from Petermann that triggered a 6-0 run to seal the victory.
3rd Set | Tied one set apiece, the third set was close.
Cassidy Markel's assist set up Petermann for a kill at 3-2, in favor of Lynn. Shortly thereafter, another Petermann kill brought the score to 7-7 and the Mocs had momentum. A 5-1 run for Lynn would eventually open up an 18-12 lead, before Lynn would lead 22-14. Lynn was too strong in the third, and claimed the victory 25-18.
4th Set | Lynn jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead, and never looked back. The Mocs would get as close nas 12-10, on a block by Porter and Markel. The Mocs would end the day with nine total blocks. Florida Southern would stay within striking range, down 19-16, on a Petermann kill. But the Fighting Knights would hold on the 25-19 set win, and the 3-1 match victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Mocs hit .198 on the day, with 43 total kills.
- Markel accounted for 38 of the team's 39 assists. Emma Shaddix had the other.
- The Mocs had none total blocks on the afternoon, and were led by Emily Crescenzi, who had two solo and five assists. Shaddix added four assists.
- Ali Travis and Formilan led the Mocs in digs with 16 and ten, respectively.
