Box Score WEST PALM BEACH -
Julia Jenike saw her first game action of the season and pumped in 17 points to lead a trio of Moccasins in double figures as the Florida Southern women's basketball team picked up a 71-60 road win at Palm Beach Atlantic University. The win evens the Moccasins' record at 2-2 while PBA falls to 0-2.
Jenike led all scorers with 17 points while
Ashley Shell added 15 and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and
Mackenzie Steele contributed 14 points.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Quarter
- The game started slowly as neither team made a field goal until Steele named a three-pointer at the 7:08 mark lifting FSC to a 3-1 lead.
- After a field goal by the Sailfish to tie the score, Steele would hit another trey followed by another three, this time by Sanya Ratnikava for a 9-3 Moccasin lead.Â
- The Moccasins extended their lead to 11-3 on a layup by Aubrey Burke at the 4:26 mark.Â
- Palm Beach Atlantic would claw its was back into the contest, pulling with two points, 15-13, wth seven ticks left in the first period.
2nd Quarter
- The score was tied three times in the opening 2:27 of the second period before Shell connected a three-point play at 7:09 to push FSC ahead 22-20.
- Back-to-back baskets by Steele gave the Moccasins their biggest lead of the game - 7 points (29-22) - with 4:38 left in the half.Â
- Again, the Sailfish came back with a six unanswered points to cut the lead to 29-28 with 2:45 to go.
- Back-to-back baskets by Jenike allowed Florida Southern to take a 34-28 lead at intermission.
3rd Quarter
- A strong quarter by Shell - 8 points - pushed the Moccasins l ead by double digits.Â
- The biggest Florida Southern lead of the period came at the 1:56 mark on a layup by Steele put the Moccasins ahead 55-35.
- Florida Southern outscored Palm Beach Atlantic, 20-10, in the period.
4th Quarter
- Florida Southern maintained its big lead throughout the final stanza, holding PBA at bay, although the Sailfish outscored the Mocs, 22-17.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Florida Southern now leads the series 26-3 with wins in three straight and in 11 of the last 12 meetings. The Mocs are 14-1 vs. PBA in West Palm Beach.
- The statistics were fairly even with the biggest stat that sticks out was a turnovers with FSC forcing 22 while committing just 11. The Mocs had 13 steals (led by Bruke's five)Â and 12 assists (five Moccasins each handing out a pair).
- Florida Southern shot .382 from the field while Palm Beach Atlantic connected on .458 percent. PBA won the battle of the boards, 39-37.
