Carroll Pours In a Career-Best 33 points as Mocs Win On the Road At Barry, 104-87

Box Score MIAMI SHORES, FLA. Brandon Carroll scored a career-high 33 points and Jalyn Hinton added 20 points and a game-high 14 rebounds to power Florida Southern to a 104-87 road win at Barry here Saturday on the Coach Cesar Odio Court at the Health and Sports Center on the campus of Barry University.
 
The win evens the Moccasins record at 2-2 while Barry drops to 2-1.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
  • Barry jumped out to a 6-0 lead and went ahead 6-2 as Florida Southern missed on three of its first four field goals. However, the Moccasins would finish the period hitting on 20-of-26 shots the rest of the way, blistering the nets for a .700 shooting percentage in the opening period. 
  • Meanwhile the Buccaneers made just 15 of their 41 first half shots and at one point missed on eight straight attempts.
  • Florida Southern clawed its way back from the 6-0 deficit and eventually grabbed the lead on a Pierce Keisler layup at the 14:50 mark for a 12-11 FSC lead. 
  • After the Buccaneers went ahead 15-14 on a pair of free throws from T.J. Smith, the Moccasins grabbed the lead back on a 7-0 run behind a three-pointer from E.J. Dambreville and back-to-back layups from Xavier Rhodes and Deandre Campbell.
  • Brandon Carroll then accounted for the Moccasins next 10 points to stake Florida Southern to a 35-26 lead with 6:40 left in the half.
  • Barry kept it close the rest of the half, but a Carroll jumper while falling to the floor at the buzzer gave the Mocs a 52-47 lead at intermission. 
  • Carroll would lead all scorers at the half with 16 points while Dambreville added 13. 
 Second Half
  • Barry opened the second half on a 7-3 run to pull within two points, 56-54, just 1:28 into the period.
  • The two clubs traded baskets until Campbell, Carroll, and Jacon Schner hit consecutive baskets to a 7-point Moccasin advantage at the 14:26 mark. 
  • Jade Kakar converted a three-point play to keep the Buccaneers within four points, 68-64, but five straight points by Hinton shot the Mocs ahead by nine, 73-64 with 13:33 to go.
  • The Buccaneers clawed at the Moccasin lead, eventually jumping ahead 82-81 with just over 6:30 to go.
  • The Moccasin then got fire, netting 16 unanswered points, including three straight three-points for Carroll for a comfortable 97-82 lead with 2:39 left in the game. 
  • Four Rhodes free throws and a three-point play from Hinton sealed the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Florida Southern now leads the series 53-23, including a 21-12 mark in Miami Shores. It was the fifth win in the last six contests versus the Buccaneers.
  • The win was Coach Mike Donnelly's 98th in his Moccasin career. He is now 98-60 in six seasons at Florida Southern.
  • For Carroll, it was his second 30-point game of the season having pumped in 32 opening night in the Mocs' 92-77 win at home against Palm Beach Atlantic. 
  • Meanwhile, Hinton just missed a triple-double handing out a career-high eight assists to go with 20 points and 14 boards. It was his third double-double in the Mocs' four games so far.
  • Dambreville finished with 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for his second double-double in as many games.
  • Also in double figures for the Moccasins were Kiesler with a career-best 14 points and Rhodes with 12 points and five assists.
  • The Moccasins committed 24 turnovers in the contest including 12 in the opening period.
  • Florida Southern hit on .587 of its field goals including 11-of-22 three-pointers and made 19-of-24 free throws. Barry was held to .368 from the field and 10-of-30 three-point attempts. The Buccaneers did make 21-of-28 free throws.
  • Florida Southern won the battle of the boards, 50-32.
