MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Florida Southern College men's basketball team completed the weekend sweep at Barry University on Monday night with a 90-85 victory. The Mocs are now 3-2 on the year, while Barry drops to 2-2.
Senior forward Jalyn Hinton scored a game-high 28 points, while grabbing nine rebounds and blocking five shots.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
- Barry jumped out to a 9-0 lead before junior guard Xavier Rhodes put the Mocs on the board with a short jumper.
- That jumper sparked a 10-0 run for Southern, capped by a Hinton fast break layup with 13:36 to play.
- Minutes later, with the score tied at 16, Hinton responded with a monster dunk and a layup, to put the Mocs up, 20-16.
- A Dominick Denny bucket would push the lead to six points with 8:29 to go, before an E.J. Dambreville jumper put Southern up by seven with 6:38 to play.
- The Mocs would eventually score the final seven points of the half to take a 44-41 lead at halftime.
- Southern shot an even 50% from the floor in the first half, as the Bucs shot 42.5%.
- Hinton had 12 points at the break, while Rhodes added ten. Dambreville contributed seven points and six rebounds.
- The teams traded the lead nine times in the half, while the score was tied on five occasions.
Second Half
- Southern built a five-point lead a few minutes into the second half, first on a pair of free throws from junior DeAndre Campbell, then again on a Denny fast-break jumper.
- The lead would then swing back to the home team, who controlled the tempo for much of the second half.
- Down seven with just over five minutes to play, the Mocs trailed 85-78.
- Campbell recorded six straight points, followed by a Hinton jumper that put Southern back in the lead, 86-85, with just 1:05 to play in regulation.
- Southern continued to push the issue, with Rhodes scoring the final four points of the game, as the Mocs secured the victory.
- In all, FSC outscored Barry 12-0 over the final 5:07 of the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Florida Southern is now 2-0 against Barry this season, with a third game scheduled for Lakeland on March 13.
- The win was Coach Mike Donnelly's 99th in his Moccasin career. He is now 99-60 in six seasons at Florida Southern.
- For the game, Barry actually shot better from the field than Southern, 45.9% to 45.3%
- FSC scored 42 points in the paint tonight.
- Southern made its free throws down the stretch, making 28 of 34 attempts as a team. Campbell personally made 12 of his 13 shots from the line.
