WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Florida Southern College men's lacrosse team dropped a 13-12 decision at Rollins College on Saturday afternoon in dramatic fashion. FSC had a chance to tie the game at the end of regulation, but hit the post for the second straight game.
The Mocs have now lost consecutive one goal games, and are 1-4 on the season. Rollins is now 2-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Quarter
- The first quarter was a wild one, full of back-and-forth action, and a total of ten goals scored.
- Senior midfielder Carson Wallace and sophomore attack Thomas Frank put the Mocs up 2-0, with goals 37 seconds apart.
- After a four-goal Rollins run, the Mocs responded with their own four-goal run, in the last 3:06. Junior attackmen Sean Nolan and Jeff Atlas scored first, before junior Cody Bielec scored with 55 seconds to go. Nolan then made the score 6-4, with the final goal of the quarter, with 12 seconds remaining.
2nd Quarter
- Rollins exploded out of the gate, scoring four unanswered goals to start the period.
- Nolan stemmed the run with an unassisted goal to end the quarter, with the score 8-7, in favor of the Tars.
3rd Quarter
- As explosive as the two offenses were in the first half, the third quarter belonged to the defenses.
- Southern uncorked 14 shots in the third, but only one was on goal.
- The sole goal of the period came from Rollins, late in the period, for a 9-7 lead.
4th Quarter
- Bielec and senior midfielder Justin Dunleavy would score early in the quarter, evening the score at 9-9, with 9:52 remaining.
- Rollins would go up one, 10-9, before Atlas would tie the score at 10, with 6:50 remaining in regulation.
- Rollins would then go on a 3-0 run, taking a 13-10 lead, which included an empty net goal, as FSC goalie Maxwell Freestone had come out to play close defense.
- But the hard-nosed Mocs refused to yield.
- Junior middie Craig Connor scored with 1:38 remaining to make it 13-11, then quickly Bielec took a pass from junior Edward May and scored, making it 13-12.
- The Mocs found possession, and with 32 seconds left, Florida Southern was set for one final play.
- With eight seconds remaining on the game clock, Atlas ripped a shot past the Rollins goalie, only to be denied by the back post. Southern would keep possession, now with 4.3 seconds left.
- Southern would put the ball in play, but would get smothered by the Rollins defense, and the game came to an end, 13-12.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Freestone played exceptionally between the pipes, making 15 saves.
- Kevin Horwitz won 15 faceoffs today.
- Bielec and Nolan each had three goals today, with Atlas recording two goals and as many assists.
- Atlas now has 113 points in his career at Florida Southern, on 45 goals and 68 assists through 28 games.
- Nolan has also gone over the 100 point mark, with 75 goals and 31 assists for 106 points, in 28 career games played.
