Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Barry

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Southern College baseball team split a Saturday double header against the Barry University Buccaneers, winning game one by a final of 15-4 before dropping the series rubber match by a final of 11-2 in seven innings. Game one starter Jarrod Cande earned his fourth win of the season after throwing 7.2 innings. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
IN GAME ONE
Florida Southern 15, Barry 4
  • The Mocs jumped out to an early lead as centerfielder Vaun Brown hit his second leadoff home run of the season as he continues to lead the Sunshine State Conference with 11 home runs.
  • Barry would answer back with a run in the second.
  • FSC responded with two runs in the third as senior Zach Scott drove in Connor Berry and Cade Shissler with a base hit to center.
  • Barry once again answered back with three runs in the fourth, only one of which would be earned for Cande.
  • The Mocs capitalized in the sixth as freshman Ahmad Fitts drove in right fielder Nick Wells on a single to right. Fitts would later score on an error by the Barry third baseman.
  • FSC added another six runs in the seventh as the Mocs strung together six hits and sent 11 men to the plate, highlighted by a two-run double from Brown and a two-run single from second baseman Collin Camarigg.
  • The Mocs would add four insurance runs in the eighth, as Brown once again drove in two runs on another double. First baseman Connor Berry would drive in the other two runs on a double to right center.
  • Cande improved his record on the mound to 4-0, striking out eight Buccaneers over his 7.2 innings.
  • Logan Verrino pitched 1.1 shutout innings of relief.
 
IN GAME TWO
Barry 11, Florida Southern 2
  • Barry would jump out to an early lead as Ihosvany Castaneda took Mocs left hander Thomas Spinelli deep with a shot just inside the left field foul pole in the first. Castaneda would score again in the third, this time on a sacrifice fly from Richie Sobalvarro.
  • FSC got on the board in the bottom of the third as C. Berry drove in Brown on a single to left center.
  • The Bucs would go on to score in five straight innings, as the Mocs failed to put up a zero after the top of the second.
  • The second and final Mocs run would come in the sixth, as Fitts would drive in Wells with a base hit to center. 
  • Spinelli would take the loss for the Mocs.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • With the split, FSC saw their record move to 11-8 overall, 3-5 at home, and 10-7 in SSC play.
  • The Mocs still lead the all-time series 80-28 overall and 43-12 in games played in Lakeland.
  • Eight of the Mocs starters scored in game one, with Brown leading the way with three runs scored.
  • Brown, Berry, Cade Shissler, Scott, Wells, and Fitts all had multi-hit efforts in the game one victory.
 
UP NEXT
The team is back in action on Friday as they head to Tampa to begin a three-game series against the Spartans. The Mocs return to Henley Field on Saturday May 1st for a doubleheader against Tampa. FSC plans to honor its seniors prior to that doubleheader. The pregame ceremony will be streamed live on the Sunshine State Conference Digital Network
